We just finished watching "Servant of the People" (orig. "Sluha Narodu") on Netflix, the 2015 series starring Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a history teacher who becomes president of Ukraine. It's much, much more than that simple premise, and the farthest thing from a formula work.

It's tremendously entertaining, insidiously educational and inspirational, all 'round brilliant, and at times laugh out loud hilarious. Middle school children everywhere should be required to watch this series and write a brief research paper on how its lessons about conflict of interest, corruption, etc. apply/have applied around the world (i.e. very much right now in the U.S.), throughout history.

It's no surprise at all why this series drove the people of Ukraine to elect Zelenskyy to the presidency.

Before becoming the heroic wartime president and "the Churchill of our time," Zelenskyy could have rested on his laurels after making Sluha Narodu. Anyone involved could have been deeply proud of the accomplishment as both a work of educational entertainment art, and said "that's my great contribution to the world." But this man who was an actor/comedian/producer for ten+ years before making Sluha Narodu then accepted the responsibility of being an anti-corruption president. (He even had to sully himself meeting with one of our U.S. oligarchs). I salute V.Z. and his comrade writers, cast, and crew for this amazing series, and as for the rest, well, he's my hero now.
