In the 33 chapters @charles.earl.spencer has written for The Rabbit Hole Book, he includes a look at the walled garden. His favourite of these is the fictional one, from The Secret Garden.

Pictured is @althorphouse walled garden – in bloom, and looking exquisite, and painted a century ago.

The word ‘paradise’ comes from the Persian word pardis – the name for a beautiful garden that lies behind a wall.

The Rabbit Hole Book (published by @michaeljbooks) was inspired by the Rabbithole Detectives podcast, which @charles.earl.spencer cohosts with real joy with @catjarman and @revrichardcoles

Originally, The Saloon was not a large room, but a hallway. Only in 1877 was it transformed into The Saloon we recognise today. The Butler’s Apartments were moved elsewhere, and the walls were pushed back to create a bigger room.

Until the early 20th century, this space functioned as a drawing room, a place to sit, relax, or converse around a roaring fire.

Recently, The Saloon was reunited with its Victorian purpose and transformed back into a sitting room for an event we hosted at the beginning of the year.

The variety of topics covered by @catjarman @revrichardcoles and @charles.earl.spencer in the 99 chapters of their new The Rabbit Hole Book ranges from Alien Abductions, through Unusual Addictions, to Pet Cemeteries. The book’s based on their Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast, but the chapters are nearly all new material.

@charles.earl.spencer has written one chapter on the battle of Blenheim, as The Almost-Forgotten Battle. @charles.earl.spencer bought this painting to hang at @althorphouse as a commemoration of the day in 1704 when his ancestor the 1st Duke of Marlborough defeated Louis XIV in one of the most decisive encounters in 18th century warfare.

THE QUEEN MARY BEDROOM

This room was used by Queen Mary and King George V when they stayed at Althorp in 1913 when they came to Northamptonshire to review thousands of troops.

Queen Mary was a dreaded house guest, with a tendency to hint very heavily that she liked a particular object belonging to her hosts, until they felt obliged to offer it to her as a gift.

The extremely tall bed is a copy of an 18th century design, and is draped in rich green taffeta.

THE PRINCESS OF WALES BEDROOM

In the spring of 2003 this room was lavishly re-hung with paintings, but the decoration and furniture have changed very little since 1911.

This bedroom is named after Princess Alexandra, wife of the future King Edward VII who both stayed at Althorp several times as guests of the 5th Earl and Countess Spencer in the 1860s.

The four-poster bedstead, designed after Queen Anne’s 1714 state bed, was made in 1923 using an oak canopy made for the Prince of Wales in 1863 and Italian cut velvet dating from 1911.
