Demand Media’s Domain Services Spinoff Will Be Called Rightside

Demand Media has taken another next step toward spinning off its domain-name business into a new publicly traded company, giving it a name and a leader. The company said on Tuesday that its standalone domain-services business will be called Rightside Group, and it tapped Taryn Naidu, currently EVP of Domain Services, as CEO.

Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt to Step Down

Richard Rosenblatt, the CEO and chairman of Demand Media, announced on Monday that he will step down from the company he co-founded and launched seven years ago. Co-founder Shawn Colo will step in as board president and interim CEO after Rosenblatt’s resignation is final, effective Oct. 31 (Halloween, as it happens). Board member James Quandt has been named chairman, effective immediately.

Tastemade, YouTube’s Would-Be Food Network, Raises $10 Million

Tastemade, a video network aimed at becoming YouTube’s version of the the Food Network, has raised $10 million from Raine Ventures and Redpoint Ventures. Industry sources say that the company, which had previously raised $5.3 million from Redpoint, had lots of interest in this round, including an offer from Food Network owner Scripps Network Interactive.

Demand Media Buys Society6, Cuts Revenue Outlook

Online content outfit Demand Media is moving into the e-commerce business. The company on Monday afternoon said it has purchased Society6, an e-commerce marketplace for artists, for about $94 million in cash and stock. The acquisition, part of Demand’s push to diversify its business, was announced along with a reduced revenue forecast for the current quarter. The company, which had previously estimated revenue of $105 million to $107 million, is now expecting $100 million to $101 million.
