Mirfak (ook bekend as Alpha Persei of α Per) is die helderste ster in die noordelike sterrebeeld Perseus, ook helderder as die sterrebeeld se bekendste ster, Algol. Mirfak het ’n skynbare magnitude van 1,8[8] en is ’n sirkumpolêre ster by middenoordelike breedtegrade.
Die ster lê in die middel van ’n sterreswerm: die Alpha Persei-swerm, wat na die ster genoem is, of Melotte 20, wat maklik met ’n verkyker gesien kan word en baie van die sterrebeeld se dowwer sterre insluit.[9] Volgens parallaksmetings is Mirfak sowat 510 ligjare van die Son af.[3]
Eienskappe
[wysig | wysig bron]Mirfak se sterreklassifikasie is F5 Ib,[1] wat beteken dit is ’n superreus in die laaste stadiums van sy evolusie. Sy spektrum dien sedert 1943 as een van die stabiele ankerpunte waarvolgens ander sterre geklassifiseer word.[10]
Sy massa is sowat 8,5 keer dié van die Son[1] en dit het uitgesit tot sowat 60 keer die Son se grootte.[5] Sy ligsterkte is 5 000 keer die Son s'n[9] teen ’n effektiewe temperatuur van 6 350 K.[1] Dit gee die ster die geelwit kleur wat tipies is van F-tipe sterre. In die Hertzsprung-Russell-diagram lê Mirfak in die streek waar Cepheïed-veranderlikes voorkom.[11] Dit is dus nuttig in die bestudering van hierdie sterre, wat belangrike standaardmeetinstrumente vir afstande in die ruimte is.[9]
Name
[wysig | wysig bron]Die ster se Bayer-naam is "α Persei". Sy tradisionele name, "Mirfak" en "Algenib", is van Arabiese oorsprong. Die eerste naam beteken "elmboog" en word ook Mirphak, Marfak of Mirzac gespel. Algenib beteken "sy" en word ook Algeneb, Elgenab, Gęnib, Chenib of Alchemb gespel.[12][13] In 2016 het die Internasionale Astronomiese Unie se sternaamwerkgroep (WGSN) die amptelike naam Mirfak vir die ster goedgekeur.[14]
Die ster word in Hawaise sterrekunde "Hinali'i" genoem, ’n naam wat ’n groot tsoenami gedenk. Volgens sommige Hawaise volksvertellings is Hinali'i die punt van skeiding tussen die aarde en die lug wat ontstaan het met die skepping van die Melkweg.[15]
