#SummerInternshipStory Last summer, New York University Abu Dhabi student Saakshi More joined talabat as a Data Science Intern. She was a part of a horizontal segment within the data team that deals with Algorithms and Machine Learning. “The most meaningful thing I have learned this summer has been the breadth of topics that a data team at a product company can solve. Within the algorithms team, I have learned what thinking like a data scientist means. Getting exposure to the nuances of data science and the processes involved in pushing a feature to production has been illuminating. This level of exposure to not only problem solving but also problem identification and prioritization techniques have made for a holistic experience. Meeting people beyond my team has also been quite enriching, giving me the opportunity to understand the expanse of product development from different perspectives - other data scientists, product designers, etc. This internship has had a significant impact on my future plans. Experiencing the practical applications of data science in a real-world setting at Talabat has solidified my passion for the field. It has affirmed my desire to pursue a career as a data scientist and further my studies in this domain. Witnessing how data-driven decision-making can drive business growth and improve user experiences has inspired me to focus on data science applications in corporate and scientific settings. Having realized the potential of this field, I am ready to carve out my growth plan to succeed in this job role. This internship gave me an overview of the breadth of the topic; now I am ready to up my knowledge and become proficient in certain verticals of the field.” Thank you talabat for giving our students such a rich internship experience!

#LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “Throughout my undergraduate years, I engaged in many research programs, viewing them as an effective way to immerse myself in an unfamiliar field. It was also a great way to facilitate interactions with professors and researchers who could provide insights into their career choices and the potential pathways for future pursuits. It is not only a way of learning about the field, but also of clarifying personal interests. Through these experiences, I gained a clearer understanding of my preferences and dislikes. Personally, I realized my inclination towards an industry-focused career. Specifically, I found a passion for engineering design work, which shaped a clear direction for my professional path. One of my most meaningful and memorable experiences at New York University Abu Dhabi was my study away program in New York. It was the perfect opportunity to take a range of electives and explore diverse engineering fields, engage in summer research, and connect with new people through competitions and projects. The multitude of opportunities not only allowed me to advance my career, but also created lasting memories.” Name: Seoyoung Kim Current Occupation: Graduate Mechanical Engineer, AECOM

#LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “My degree in computer science with a minor in interactive media at New York University Abu Dhabi taught me the fundamentals of coding, problem-solving and creative thinking that I use daily to make decisions on how to best address a task or feature as a software engineer at Wio Bank. Using these skill sets at part-time jobs and student organizations at NYUAD helped me become better in the frameworks I use daily in the workplace. After a cyclone hit my home country Fiji, I planned to major in civil engineering at NYUAD to learn how to build structures that would be resilient to cyclones and hurricanes. However, taking Programming for Engineers and Introduction to Computer Science in my first semester sparked my interest in the tech field. In my spare time, I wrote scripts to solve basic math problems or manipulate data. Soon after, I became interested in software engineering as it would allow me to build software and see immediate results. While we were in lockdown during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned the basics of web development from an online course on Udemy. The opportunity to take courses outside my initial major helped me identify my interest for software engineering. It’s okay to lean into your interests and switch your major if the opportunity calls for it." Name: Aayush D. Current Occupation: Software Engineer, Wio Bank PJSC

#SummerInternshipStory Last summer, New York University Abu Dhabi senior student Tala Alouf interned at the Ministry of Education – UAE’s Graduates and Labor Department, where she focused heavily on identifying the majors in demand in the labor market to increase their chances of finding suitable employment in the future. “I knew I was interested in education initiatives, but didn’t know which exact path to follow. Working with the Ministry offered many options for me to explore, and I realized that working with the graduates and labor market department allowed me to do meaningful work that not only addresses current challenges in education but also contributes to shaping the future of the workforce and economy.” We love hearing about our students' internship experiences and are so grateful to organizations like Ministry of Education – UAE for offering them such meaningful opportunities to explore their interests.

#LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “My degree in economics allowed me to explore a diverse set of courses, ensuring that I learn a bit of everything while also allowing me to focus and specialize in the specific sector I was driven towards, which in my case was sovereign wealth funds. Prior to coming to New York University Abu Dhabi I was heavily focused on biology. Within one semester of taking multiple courses in the Core Curriculum, I realized that I had been limiting myself by focusing on one subject I was good at. NYUAD allowed me to experiment and to leave my comfort zone in a way that led to discovering a passion for economics and public policy. The liberal arts education at NYUAD allowed me to broaden my horizons in a way that both challenged and motivated me. Studying abroad was one of the most meaningful experiences during my time at NYUAD. The opportunity to study away in London during my senior year while working on my Capstone was an experience that was both challenging and satisfying at the same time. Having the opportunity to widen the resources I could use for my research and being fully responsible for its progress, all the while attempting to navigate life abroad for the first time away from my family allowed me to grow significantly both academically and personally. I started out as an intern at my current workplace where I spent more than six months working with two different teams, first to attempt to find where my passion lies and second to push myself to learn as much as possible. I think a huge part of it was understanding the work ethic at my workplace and deciding whether it matched mine. The most enjoyable part of my current position is the continuously evolving learning curve that comes with working in a diverse industry. The fact that no two projects look the same makes for a constant learning journey as I develop my skills in understanding the financial world." #LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “My journey at New York University Abu Dhabi has been nothing but transformative. The diverse and interdisciplinary approach has been instrumental in shaping my worldview and fueling my creative endeavors. Through enriching courses offered by the core curriculum, I was equipped with academic knowledge and instilled with a profound curiosity to explore the world from unconventional angles. The vibrant mosaic of students from diverse backgrounds provided an invaluable opportunity to immerse myself in a global community. Interacting with minds as varied as the world itself has been a motive for my growth. Today, I am pursuing an MFA in filmmaking as a Fulbright Scholar. It is a stepping stone because this program aligns seamlessly with my transformative experiences at NYUAD. In the intricate world of filmmaking, every frame is a canvas, and every narrative choice is a brushstroke. This MFA is more than a degree; it's an immersive journey that extends beyond technical proficiency." Read Sadeq's full story at the link below! #LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “My passion for education, particularly 21st-century education and instructional game design, was sparked during my introduction to the Interactive Media (IM) program and the MakerSpace at New York University Abu Dhabi. In J-Term of 2020, I enrolled in the course “Resourcefulness: Ethiopia,” which included a trip to an under-resourced Ethiopian school seeking educational solutions. There, I helped create technology-enhanced learning resources, experiencing firsthand the roles of both designer and learner dedicated to creative impact. These moments ignited my drive to design and provide enjoyable learning experiences, leveraging technology to empower learners beyond traditional methods and help them thrive in the 21st century. When I first arrived at NYU Abu Dhabi, I planned to major in biology. However, the liberal arts curriculum at NYUAD encouraged me to explore new fields and delve into untapped interests. This exploration shifted my academic trajectory from biology to Interactive Media and Business, with a specific interest in learning design/education. Despite this shift, the guiding hand in my journey has been a commitment to enhancing people’s, especially children’s, well-being and quality of life, an aim that initially drew me to biology." #LifeBeyondSaadiyat #Classof2023 #NYUAD2023 #VioletPride “I met the founder of my current workplace as a communications student assistant on a project I was leading with the Office of Community Outreach at New York University Abu Dhabi. We connected in-person at a volunteer event hosted by community outreach. We built a relationship based on a mutual desire to assist refugees to equitably access remote work opportunities. We realized there were so many aspects of my education that I could apply to her organization to build even more efficiency into her company’s processes. The founder then asked me to join her team as an intern and later as a part-time employee. I now work with her to build technology that assists us in helping the refugee talent that we train to access remote work opportunities. My role is also cross-functional as I am also involved in technical skills assessments of refugees, handling relationship-building with our partners and leading our communications efforts. It is a deeply rewarding professional experience, as I am able to see my work have a real-time impact on the lives of refugee communities from so many places around the world. We are currently running programmes in Kenya and Ethiopia with partners like the World Bank and the Digital Opportunity Trust to support refugee talent in accessing remote work. Working to actively empower vulnerable communities in the region I am from is a dream I have had since I was a child that I am now seeing come to life, and this makes me feel so deeply blessed."
