It was an honour for HullWiper to join approximately 100 participants in a “Test Biofouling Project Regional Demonstration” workshop recently held in Panama, targeting the Latin American and Caribbean regions. This event, organised by GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships and IMO-NORAD TEST Biofouling project, in collaboration with MTCC Caribbean , MTCC Latin America and COMISION PERMANENTE DEL PACIFICO SUR, was designed to enhance awareness of #biofouling management on ships and educate regional stakeholders on marine fouling procedures and guidelines. It brought together industry experts to discuss strategies for preventing the spread of invasive aquatic species (IAS) and promoting gender equality in biofouling management, and the agenda featured training in biofouling risk assessment and inspection techniques. One of the highlights was the in-water cleaning technology demonstration at the Port of Balboa, using the HullWiper ROV and conducted by our Panamanian partners Talleres Industriales which showcased deployment, attachment to vessels and the use of high-pressure seawater jets to remove hull fouling. This gave participants the opportunity to engage with our specialists and learn about the technology’s functionalities, operational efficiency and environmental impact. We also attended the Latin America and Caribbean Women in Maritime Biofouling Management Workshop aiming to empower #WomenInBiofouling within the maritime sector. During the workshop, HullWiper MD John Armstrong discussed the role of technological advancements in biofouling management and IAS control. The training series, hosted by the International Maritime University of Panama, was organised by the IMO GloFouling Partnerships Project and TEST Biofouling project, in collaboration with the MTCCs of Latin America and the Caribbean. Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosafety funded a study: on impacts of biofouling on GHG emissions; which found that only a thin layer of slime on ships' hull can increase GHG emissions for up to 25%. On #WorldEnvironmentDay together with our sister project IMO-NORAD TEST Biofouling project we would like to continue raising awareness that following good biofouling management practices is beneficial to the environment both from biodiversity and climate change aspects, i.e. prevents the spread of invasive species and reduces GHG emissions.
