The World Utilities Congress (WUC) wrapped up today after three days of discussion, debate and knowledge sharing. Against the backdrop of an intensifying #climatecrisis, attendees at the event—ranging from CEOs and innovators to ministers and policymakers—discussed the latest trends, challenges, and solutions in the sector. The event: -Addressed the sector's integral role in the global #renewableenergy transition, -Explored the worsening water crisis and ways to address it, -Examined the water-energy nexus, -Discussed decarbonising value chains, -Analysed the latest developments in electrification, grid infrastructure & much more. Throughout the event, minimising the environmental impact of desalination—traditionally a resource—and energy-intensive process—was high on the agenda. At present, around just 1 per cent of #desalination is currently powered by renewable energy. As populations grow, water demand surges and the climate crisis exacerbates water scarcity, finding a way to sustainably produce water is paramount. Discussions on water reuse came into view, with delegates discussing both its applications and limitations - as well as the technologies that would lead to lower costs and higher purification. The expansion of renewable and nuclear power generation was also examined by panellists, as was the #climatefinance required to fund it. Elsewhere, the switch to #EVs and the infrastructure required to facilitate the overhaul were explored. Reflecting on the event, of which ESG Mena was a media partner, Founder Sal Jafar, present on the ground throughout, said: "The World Utilities Congress hosted some really important conversations and witnessed a number of strategic partnerships and MoUs that will hopefully facilitate greater efforts to combat the climate crisis and provide affordable, equitable and sustainable utilities to those across our region and beyond." Adding: "Looking ahead, I hope to see more well-funded innovation and partnerships that will catalyse action for a fast, fair and funded energy transition." Stay tuned for Q&As and interviews from the event on the ESG Mena website.

COP 28 led to a pledge to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. However, the world is woefully off-track, and there is a serious regional disparity in energy transition progress. Finance is essential to unlocking a fair, just and inclusive #energytransition, and while there is no shortage of money, the funding gap remains eye-wateringly wide, and finance isn't being effectively directed to where it is most needed. This week, at the World Utilities Congress, ESG Mena's Sal Jafar moderated a session titled 'Capitalising on clean energy with green investments,' to discuss the challenge that stands before us. Joined by GE Vernova's Ahmed Bahei-Eldin, Climate Strategies' Lucia Fuselli, KPMG's Salman Mohammed and the International Finance Corporation's Sufyan Al ISSA, the panel explored: -Innovation in #greenfinancing models, -The barriers to unlocking green financing, -Navigating regulatory frameworks, and -Scaling green energy investment. What are your thoughts on what's needed to unlock green financing? What innovations need to come to the forefront? And what progress would you like to see in the coming year?
