Data has historically been classified neither as tangible nor intangible property, often lacking clear legal recognition. However, the recent DIFC Law No. 2 of 2024 (“Digital Assets Law”) marks a pivotal shift by formally acknowledging digital assets as a distinct form of property. A landmark case, Gate Mena DMCC v. Tabarak Investment Capital Limited [2023] DIFC CA 002, further advances this conversation. Although it occurred prior to the enactment of the Digital Assets Law, the DIFC Court of Appeal recognized property rights in digital assets based on UK common law. Last week we celebrated our fourth CSR Week across our offices to showcase the impactful work we do year-round and to strengthen our support for local communities. The week kicked off with an inspiring CSR breakfast featuring Sarah E Brook, the founder of The Sparkle Foundation, who shared her story and highlighted the foundation’s efforts for children in Malawi. Following this, we partnered with Al Jalila Foundation and Dubai Center for Special Needs to host a creative workshop for children with determination, allowing us to connect with them through art. Midweek, we organised a CSR Roundtable, bringing together colleagues from various organisations in the UAE to explore collaboration opportunities and discuss CSR initiatives. Our Iraq team distributed 100 school bags to students in need, while our Abu Dhabi and Qatar teams focused on raising awareness for Breast Cancer. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this impactful week; it was a resounding success that reinforced our collective commitment to community engagement. Recently, Al Tamimi & Company held a breakfast briefing at our DIFC offices, offering critical insights on the UAE’s new Commercial Agencies Law, one year after its implementation. This briefing was structured to address both strategic and sector-specific challenges, featuring three focused sessions.   The event opened with a panel moderated by Mariam Sabet—Partner and Competition Law expert—who shared valuable insights into how the new Commercial Agencies Law intersects with competition law. She was joined by Dispute Resolution Partners Naief Yahia and ameer noor alongside Corporate Commercial Partner Willem Steenkamp, to explore the evolving landscape of dispute resolution and strategies for structuring agreements within the updated legal framework.   The discussions continued with two fireside chats offering industry perspectives. In the first session, Hossam Abdelrahim, MBA and Elena Cortés from General Mills discussed principals’ evolving needs, particularly how agents can better support operational goals.
