In 2012 WOHA was invited by the Taichung City Government and Feng Chia University to bring its exhibition “Breathing Architecture” to Taichung. This exhibition was part of a program initiated by the city government’s Gateway Project Masterplan which focused on the design principles of sustainability, low carbon emissions and smart cities. The government was in the process of drafting new regulations to make Taichung a greener, more liveable city in its next phase of development.
Following the exhibition, the developer @goldenjade.com.tw, with Feng Chia University as an advisor, commissioned WOHA to design a green and sustainable mixed-use development in the heart of the city, the first of its kind in Taichung.

The design of @kees.sg is modern contemporary with echoes of 1930s Art Deco banking halls. Upcycled wooden joists from the original heritage building, gunmetal metal mesh and tubing elements, mirror, marble and timber panelling create a warm, lively and meaningful environment.
Two significant, large paintings by Singaporean artist Khairulddin Wahab (@krdn_) were commissioned specially for the space. The paintings depict colonial Singapore through the eyes of the plantation workers, who were the customers of the Remittance Hall in the 1930s.
The paintings are both beautiful and challenging, as the gorgeous colours and vibrant tropical vegetation frame stories of colonisation and hardship – the hard work that started Singapore on its journey to modern prosperity.
As day transitions to night, the mirrors darken and reflect the sparkle of the bar and the softly lit tabletops. The softly lit heritage octagonal columns, paintings and lanterns glow with welcome.
Kee’s 25m glazed corner frontage illuminates this inviting destination, a cozy, vibrant beacon at the heart of the Boat Quay and Clarke Quay conservation district.

@kees.sg is a 71-seat bistro in the historic 1936 Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee Remittance Hall, the Asian-influenced bistro menu is designed as an authentic neighbourhood favourite for the local community.
The destination restaurant operates from 7am to midnight and is designed to change in mood as the day progresses, from charming and relaxing in the mornings to upbeat and sexy in the evenings.
The design creates a diverse variety of spaces, organised over a variety of levels that create different zones and lively people-watching.
The open kitchen is located at the highest level, transforming food preparation into performance. Outdoor dining in the five foot way is screened with planter boxes, creating a sense of separation and cool relief from the elevated bustling pavements along New Bridge Road.
Huge windows framed in recycled joists from the old hall bring the energy of the five foot way into the calm and bright interior, where intimate tables are cooled by gently turning ceiling fans.
