A growing number of individuals are extending their careers well beyond the traditional retirement age. After reaching a low of 10.8% in 1985, the labor force participation rate among individuals aged 65 and older has steadily climbed, reaching 19.2% in 2023. This trend is influenced by several factors, including economic necessity, personal fulfillment, and governmental policies that encourage extended participation in the workforce. The labor force participation rate of individuals aged 65 and older varies significantly across the country, however. Researchers ranked locations by the share of the 65-and-older population in the labor force, taking into account people who were either employed, or unemployed but actively looking for work.

Avery Johnson threw two touchdown passes and Jack Fabris' 60-yard fumble return produced the winning touchdown as No. 17 Kansas State rallied past Tulane 34-27 on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans. Johnson completed 15 of 23 passes for 181 yards, with one of his scoring passes going to DJ Giddens, who added 114 rushing yards on 19 carries for the Wildcats (2-0). Fabris' return broke a tie midway through the fourth quarter. Tulane's Darian Mensah was 19-of-29 passing for 342 yards and two touchdowns, but his fumble led to the decisive score. Mekhi Hughes rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown and Mario Williams had 128 receiving yards for the Green Wave (1-1). Tulane drove to the Kansas State 1 in the final minute, but an offensive pass interference penalty nullified Mensah's touchdown pass, and VJ Payne intercepted a Mensah pass with 12 seconds remaining. Chris Tennant kicked a 28-yard field goal to start the second-half scoring and pull Kansas State within 20-13. Tulane, which scored two touchdowns and made two field goals on its last four possessions of the first half, punted at the end of its first two possessions of the third quarter. Johnson threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Giddens to tie the score at 20 late in the third. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Mensah threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Alex Bauman to give the Green Wave a 27-20 lead, but on the ensuing possession Dylan Edwards ran 13 yards for a tying touchdown. Tulane reached the Kansas State 18 on the next possession before going backward, and Fabris' score gave the Wildcats a 34-27 lead with 8:13 remaining. On Kansas State' second possession of the game, Tennant kicked a 48-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Tulane responded on the ensuing possession as Hughes rushed 3 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Green Wave increased the lead to 14-3 on its next possession as Mensah threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Bauman. The Wildcats responded with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Will Swanson to get within four points. Jacob Barnes kicked field goals of 40 and 41, leaving the Green Wave with a 20-10 halftime lead. --Field Level Media

Kyle Konrardy converted a 54-yard field goal Saturday with six seconds left, capping an Iowa State comeback from a 13-point halftime deficit as it defeated in-state rival No. 21 Iowa 20-19 in Iowa City. The Cyclones (2-0) drove 42 yards in five plays after taking possession at their 22 with 34 seconds left. The big play was Rocco Becht's 30-yard completion to Jaylin Noel that got Iowa State to the Hawkeyes' 38. Two plays later, Konrardy hit the game-winner. Becht was 23 of 35 for 272 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Noel caught five passes for 133 yards as the Cyclones outgained Iowa (1-1) 361-303. Kaleb Johnson starred in defeat for the Hawkeyes, rushing for 187 yards and both of Iowa's touchdowns on 25 carries. Quarterback Cade McNamara hit just 13 of 29 passes for 99 yards and tossed two interceptions. Konrardy also hit a 46-yard field goal with 11:32 remaining to pull Iowa State within 19-17, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Iowa controlled the first half, allowing no first downs and only 18 total yards in the first quarter while controlling the ball behind Johnson's big runs. The Hawkeyes initiated scoring on their second possession, cashing in a 43-yard field after a short jump. Johnson covered the final 27 yards for a 7-0 lead at the 6:29 mark of the first quarter. Iowa nudged the lead to 13-0 at halftime as Drew Stevens converted second-quarter field goals of 23 and 21 yards. The Hawkeyes failed to get six points on the first field goals after getting possession at the Iowa State 12, then drove 77 yards before the next scoring drive stalled out at the 4. Trailing 13-0 at halftime, the Cyclones cranked up their offense in the second half. Becht got them on the board via a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Higgins, then answered Johnson's 3-yard scoring jaunt by connecting with Noel for a 75-yard touchdown at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter. --Field Level Media

Nohl Williams intercepted two passes, including one with 2:11 to play, and California avenged a home loss last season with a 21-14 road win over Auburn in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon. Fernando Mendoza threw two touchdown passes to Nyziah Hunter before leaving the game with a leg injury and Jaivian Thomas produced the eventual difference-making score on a 32-yard run with 11:27 remaining in the game, allowing the Golden Bears (2-0) to score the upset. Auburn (1-1) won the first-ever meeting between the schools 14-10 last September in Berkeley, Calif. Payton Thorne threw for 165 yards and one touchdown and ran for another for Auburn, but was intercepted four times. His TD pass covered 15 yards to KeAndre Lambert-Smith for the game's first score just 3:18 into the contest. Auburn, which rolled up 628 total yards in a 72-3 romp over Alabama A&M last week, was held to 286 by Cal. The Golden Bears finished with 332 total yards without a turnover. Auburn lost the ball five times, including once on a fumble. Lu-Magia Hearns III and Ja'ir Smith also intercepted passes for Cal, which struggled at home to beat UC Davis 31-13 in its opener last week. The Golden Bears, who joined the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, were able to win despite getting minimal production from star running back Jaydn Ott, who suffered an ankle injury in the Davis win. The All-American candidate gained just 11 yards on 10 carries. Mendoza finished 25-for-36 passing for 233 yards and the two scores. Hunter, Mavin Anderson and Jonathan Brady had four catches each for Cal, which spread the ball around to nine different receivers. Hunter's TD catches covered 19 yards to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter and 13 yards to give Cal a lead it never relinquished in the second period. Thomas was Cal's leading ballcarrier with 53 yards on eight attempts. Auburn's Jarquez Hunter was the game's leading rusher with 68 yards on 12 carries. Thorne's TD run came from 2 yards out for the game's final score with 6:06 to play. -Field Level Media
