The stereotype in old movies and TV shows is that the man hates his mother-in-law. Well, in "Loose Relations" it doesn't follow this convention, as Andy Clyde is actually happy that his mother-in-law is coming to stay with them and he plans on fixing up a place for her to stay. In a funny scene, when he tells his neighbors, they offer his an axe and a gun!
As for the mother-in-law, she IS the stereotypical mother-in-law! She is thoughtless and mean (bringing a HUGE St. Bernard with her) and treats poor Andy like he's a nothing. You just wonder how long good natured Andy will put up with this battle axe! I will say that eventually the two end up having a fist fight...as the neighbors watch and cheer!
I enjoyed this one much more than most of the other Clyde films he made for Educational or Columbia. I think seeing a man slapping around his mother-in-law is very satisfying...if you have a beast of a mother-in-law! Well worth seeing.
By the way, in his comedies and B-westerns, Andy looks much older than he really was. In this picture, he's 41 but looks much older.
