Patrick Winczewski was born and raised in Berlin. He studied drama with
Erika Dannhoff and worked as assistant to
the stage director at the Tribuene Berlin. He first contracted with the
Berliner Kammerspiele for the debut performance of Michael Ende's
The NeverEnding Story (1984)
(The Never Ending Story). Engagements with productions in Berlin,
Hamburg, Aachen, Muenster and several theatre tours followed, the
latest being Geliebte Hexe in 2006.
In 1986, Patrick Winczewski debuted as director at the Theater 36 in Berlin, staging Die grosse Wut des Philipp Hotz by Max Frisch. The same year he first appeared on film -- and has since been doing so quite regularly, e.g. in: Reichshauptstadt privat (1987), Moffengriet - Liebe tut, was sie will (1990), the US production Shining Through (1992), Schneesturm im Fruehling and the two-part feature Heiß und kalt (1997). Patrick Winczewski has played lead roles in five TV-series: Hotel Paradies (1990), Vera und Babs (1989), Elbflorenz (1994), Zwischen Tag und Nacht (1995) and The Country Doctor (1987).
Since 1997, Winczewski has been directing TV dramas, 30 episodes of Verbotene Liebe (1995) (Forbidden Love), 33 episodes of Lindenstraße (1985), followed by numerous other productions, e.g. Herzschlag - Das Ärzteteam Nord (1999), Ein anderes Leben (2000), SOKO München (1978), Cologne P.D. (2003), A Case for Two (1981) and numerous episodes of Leipzig Homicide (2001). He directed his first Tatort (1970) in 2008, his second one will be broadcast in 2009.
He is the German voice of Tom Cruise and Hugh Grant.
