YRB - Repair and Berthing Barge
YRB is a non self-propelled 110 foot by 34 foot Repair & Berthing barge, designed for the purpose of providing berthing and repair services at industrial yards overhauling submarines, SS types, or other ships which require their personnel to vacate the ship during its availability. Limited shops aboard the YRB are provided to permit the crew to perform minor repair services for these ship's within the capabilities of the ships force. Sleeping quarters are also provided.
Most YRBs in use were modified from existing YC or YFN types by providing the equipment (berths, heads, shops, etc.) required by the user activity. In as much as each activity requiring the services of such a barge differed from yard to yard (some required berths only, some shops only, some berths and mess facilities or a combination of these facilities) each craft was tailored to the specific needs of the activity. As a result no two YRB's were modified alike, each one possessing its own features.
Recently the Navy has standardized on a repair, berthing, and messing barge designated YRBM which is intended to provide the services formerly provided by the YRB. YRBM description is discussed elsewhere in the manual.
It can be expected that the YRB, when beyond economical repair, will eventually be phased out and dropped from the listing of Service Craft types.
In some instances, a second deck 01 level was added. Description is limited in view of the non-standardization.
