Cookies policy

In order to perform our duties to EU citizens, we place some cookies on your device. A cookie is a small piece of data that a website stores on the visitor’s device to improve the navigation experience. We place them in full compliance with Directive 2002/58/EC which, together with Regulation (EU) 2018/1725, determines the rules for using cookies that process personal data from end users inside the EU.

Because you de-activated javascript in your browser, the European Parliament does not add any analytical cookie on your device. If you change your mind and accept to be tracked by the European Parliament, please activate javascript in your browser and refresh your cache.

What does this cookie policy cover?

This cookie policy covers the websites we publish and make available on the internet under the europarl.europa.eu domain and its sub-domains.

It does NOT apply to any websites published under a domain other than europarl.europa.eu. All ‘external’ websites must have their own cookie policy and inventory.

What types of cookie do we use?

We use cookies for the technical functioning of the websites for which we are responsible and, if you consent, to collect information about your browsing experience on our websites for aggregated statistics, with the aim of improving our communications and the services we offer.

Our policy is to limit the cookies we store on your device as much as possible. If the cookie is not essential, we do not store it.

We use different types of cookies that are intended for different purposes.

Technical and session cookies

The technical and session cookies we might store are necessary for our websites to function correctly, so are considered mandatory. We install them by default on your device.

Preferences cookies

The preferences cookies we might store manage two aspects:

  • your language preference (quite useful, as most of our websites are in 24 languages);
  • your consent, or not, to be tracked by our web analytics tool.

Analytics cookies

The analytics cookies we might store on your device aim to collect statistical information about how our websites are used. These cookies are optional.

The list of the cookies we might store is available on our cookies inventory page.

What do our analytics cookies target?

We have selected the Web Analytics tool of AT Internet (a Piano company) to monitor your navigation and to improve the quality of your browsing experience. This tool helps us to prepare aggregated and anonymous statistical reports.

We have configured this tool in order to limit the collection of our users’ personal data as much as possible. For instance, we have implemented IP address de-identification by automatically truncating the last octet (the last 3 digits) of each visitor’s IP (internet protocol) address, making it impossible to identify visitors solely from their IP addresses.

We use the cookies stored on your device to collect the following information:

  • IP address (anonymised);
  • Sources (types, campaigns, domains, etc.);
  • Content being viewed (title of the page, editorial page settings, path of pages, URL and canonical URL, language, etc.);
  • Geolocation (country, region, town)
  • Technical profiles (devices, operating system, browsers, user’s screen size, etc.);
  • Periods (date and time of the visit to the site, user’s time zone);
  • Site search;
  • Events (clicks on our content, on action buttons, etc.);
  • Files that were clicked and downloaded;
  • Domains (links to an external website, referrer website).

The list of our analytics cookies is available on our cookies inventory page.

You may also consult the notice of our web analytics tool in our Data Protection Register.

How can you accept or refuse our analytics cookies?

You may accept or refuse our analytics cookies via the consent banner displayed at the bottom of the page on our websites, or via the widget proposed on the top of this page.

We do not store analytics cookies without your prior consent.

If you decide not to express your agreement, i.e. by ignoring the question, we will not store any cookies.

If you change your mind afterwards, you may change your initial selection via the widget available here above.

If you prefer not to be tracked, you can also activate the ‘Do not track’ feature available in all browsers. You can activate it by accessing your browser’s ‘Settings’.

Are you exposed to third party cookies when navigating our websites?

Our websites may contain links to other websites with their own cookies and privacy policies over which we do not have any control. We recommend that you read the cookie policy, the privacy policy and the terms and conditions of the website concerned prior to loading it.
