EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in 2D Materials of Tomorrow (2DMoT)

Discover the Centre

The Centre for Doctoral Training in 2D Materials of Tomorrow (2DMoT) is a four-year PhD programme which provides students with the knowledge and skills for cutting edge, cross-disciplinary research in the science and applications of two-dimensional materials - a new class of advanced materials with potential to transform modern technologies, from clean energy to quantum engineering.

The CDT will start accepting applications from October 2024 for September 2025 entry. Further information about the CDT programme and how to apply will be available on our website from September 2024.

Research areas

  • Materials discovery for quantum electronics; novel heterostructures, twistronics, 2D magnets and superconductors.
  • 2D materials and heterostructures for adaptive and energy-efficient optoelectronics and thermal management.
  • 2D materials-based sensors and devices.
  • 2D materials, membranes and separators for energy-efficient green hydrogen technologies (solar water splitting, fuel cells, methane-to-hydrogen conversion).
  • Next generation filtration and separation membranes for nanofluidics and  environmentally-friendly technologies, e.g., water purification, biofiltration applications, etc.
  • 2D material-enhanced composites and protective coatings.
  • Physico-chemical processes under strong confinement; energy storage, intercalation; innovative synthesis and growth of 2D materials.

The 2D Materials of Tomorrow CDT offers an opportunity to do a PhD in a highly interdisciplinary environment and as part of collaborative teams comprising world-leading researchers from The University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge. As a PhD student you will participate in pioneering research on a wide range of topics while gaining experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, interaction with high tech and engineering companies and communication with the wider society – a perfect foundation for a future career in academia or industry.

How to apply

All applicants to the CDT should apply to The University of Manchester, regardless of whether your research project will be based in Manchester or Cambridge.
We do not specify a formal deadline for applying to the CDT, but we encourage you to apply as early as possible. We expect all places to be filled by the end of March 2025.
To complete your application you should have the following:

  • A personal statement: a statement indicating your preferred University for the research project (Manchester or Cambridge) and two research missions you would like to join (see above), in order of priority. Also, describe briefly (no more than 300 words) why you chose these research areas.
  • Certificates and transcripts: Certificates and final transcripts of any completed university-level qualifications and interim transcripts for qualifications in progress. If you have not completed your degree, please provide interim transcripts and forward your final transcripts and certificate(s) when they are available.
  • CV: Summarising your academic record and highlighting experience that demonstrates your potential to conduct research.
  • Referees: Names and contact details of two referees. These should typically be academics related to your previous degree, however if you have industry experience one referee can be from this source. Let your referees know that the CDT will be contacting them directly for a reference.
  • English language proof (for international applicants): A certificate of evidence demonstrating your English language ability and proficiency. Applications can be considered without this evidence, but any offer would be conditional on meeting the language requirements.

You should then submit your application form online. When prompted during the application process, select the following information:

  • Level of Study: Postgraduate by Research
  • Entry Year: 2025
  • Academic Programme: Search for the keywords ‘CDT’ and ‘2D Materials’ and then select the PhD programme
  • Research details: Specific project - select ‘No’;  Proposed area of research – type in the two research missions to which you are applying, in order of priority;  Identified Supervisorselect ‘No’
  • Funding sources: UK applicants – select ‘No’

You will be prompted to upload documentation required to support your application, see the list of required documents above.

In addition, please email [email protected] to let us know that you have submitted an application.
