If Richard Pryor had only shaved that signature, comfortable, A-list mustache during the important catapulting Vietnam sequence that, within the page-turning James Kirkwood novel SOME KIND OF HERO there's a lot more dramatic and fleshed-out situations than what we have here: a film in which the main character's capture (shown on the poster, VHS cover and trailers) while taking a neurotic leak in the jungles of Vietnam seem like yet-another Pryor comedy...<br>

Though Richard's Eddie Keller and his friendship with fellow American captive Vinnie, played by the always-dependable Ray Sharkey, is a worthy half-hour… including  and especially an intense moment where Eddie lays down the law to his initially unglued, "tough-guy pretentious" cellmate, who threatens Eddie's only friend, a returning mouse…<br>

Then Pryor's rhythm transfers somewhat smoothly as another, far more important progression occurs, turning HERO into an awkward dark comedy back home when, after his personal life hits a few giganic snags, including a cheating wife, a sick mother and what he <i>had to do</i> back in Vietnam haunting his future, Eddie becomes a bumbling crook to get the money he deserved for serving, and sacrificing for, his country... Then he sets his sites on something more reliable...<br>

<div></div>Based on James Kirkwood’s novel about an American soldier taken hostage in Vietnam, surviving three years in a prison only to face more challenges back home: his cheating wife spent his money and the army won’t pay him. Richard Pryor plays the lead, and while he can do dramatic roles – BLUE COLLAR is proof… his presence here, donning his signature mustache and not taking every scene very serious, is a miscast. The story begins with Pryor’s capture and then a friendship with fellow prisoner Ray Sharkey. The subject of imprisonment glosses through to the second half: Pryor back home and, having lost everything, robs the government and is eventually mixed up with mobsters. This “Dramedy” has some decent moments – the plight of a desperate man without a port in the storm is involving. And Margot Kidder, as the hooker with a heart of gold, not only helps Pryor through his predicament, but often centers the bee-lining story that’s never quite sure what it is, or where it's going.

A Gothic WHO'S THAT KNOCKIN' AT MY DOOR has two men in their twenties: Ken Lerner, writing a cathartic novel about his dead aunt, and Ray Sharkey, who's more spontaneous than deep, hanging out and doing close to nothing...<br />
<br />
They go to a bar where Danny Elfman is singing cabaret, meet Victor Argo and Herve Velechez, then visit a funeral home, have coffee, take a tour, return to the bar, then to a diner, drive around and talk some more... mostly about death, a topic brooding Lerner's obsessed with and that Sharkey ignores.<br />

And then, because of a sudden situation that occurs midway, Lerner's left with only cold memories and depression, and the film peters out much too soon.  Martin Brest wrote and directed this B&W super-low-budget indie right before hitting mainstream with GOING MY WAY, BEVERLY HILLS COP, MIDNIGHT RUN, and eventually his Waterloo disaster, GIGLI. And Orson Welles provides the radio announcer's voice for the cemetery, so don't expect to see him anywhere around.
