All while his vengeful father and brooding brothers (including LOLITA actor Gary Cockrell) are on their trail and, along with Tarzan's group there's a great cast including Lionel Jeffries as a jealous husband, whose wife has a thing for the captured heavy yet MAGNIFICENT is a mostly hi/miss adventure that relies on random bursts of action while the characters (far too many here) never really gel... Leaving Scott's final TARZAN role more a whimper than bang until a QUIET MAN style fist-fight with Mahoney that should have not only happened sooner... but a lot more throughout. </p><span></span>

Despite critic Leonard Maltin's opinion that Walter Brennan was outrageously 
miscast in Jean Renoir's SWAMP WATER, set in the mysterious Georgian 
Okefenokee with more of a rural John Ford style than Renoir's own 
"foreign film" masterpiece, GRAND ILLUSION, Brennan's actually, surprsingly quite 
effective as an escaped convict with a "Wrong Man" backstory; a bizarre 
mental ability to survive otherwise deadly Cottonmouth bites... <br />

This
 ghostly, suspenseful, contained yet sporadically adventurous programmer
 is only hindered by a few side-characters (including otherwise 
capable heavies Ward Bond and Guinn Williams) who seem more befitting a dusty saloon town then 
backwater nowhere, and, surprisingly enough, Western-genre staple 
Brennan – seeming as agile and dangerous as his threats spoken in that 
signature drawl – isn't a culprit of the Cowboy cliche...<br />
<br />
Dana
 Andrews, early in his career before the star-making turn in LAURA, is 
natural and effective – how surprising such a "Hollywood Handsome" 
leading man with a "city" voice could realistically portray someone so 
rural, who's never been outside the murky swamp-surrounded village – 
smaller than even one horse.<br />

already-established Brennan and his stubborn father played by Walter

 shack: That being, the secret of Brennan's Tom Keefer, a 
fugitive accused of murder, rumored to be long gone yet actually lurking
 very nearby: always 
keeping a tight eye on gator hunters, including the men who sentenced 
him to hang – mostly, though, he's tortured about the daughter left 
behind...<br />

The only slight but non-distracting miscast is
 Anne Baxter's half-crazy "wild girl," Keefer's daughter, looking like a
 starlet in a cave-girl costume – of course she's attracted to our 
leading man, and vice versa (Linda Darnell, another future FALLEN ANGEL 
and also ZERO HOUR cast member, almost landed the role: which might've worked 
better given her savage beauty): But 
Renoir doesn't veer down that many predictable avenues, at least not for
 very long. For his core fans, this isn't a genuine art film while a 
conventional audience may yearn for more action – but with just enough 
brawn and brains to go around, this dusty little gem shines for a 
steady, even-keeled 90-minutes. The director, recently exiled from 
German-occupied France, made his very own American popcorn flick with an
 underlying pulse and atmosphere of something a bit deeper, despite eventual studio interference and re-shoots... that aren't noticeable. <br />

 handsome agent meanders from one situation to another seeking out 
neo-Nazis, bedding down babes and being chased by lethal goons, and the 
biker aspect is connected by a sexy woman who, after talking on various 
pay phones after each spy sequence, will then converse with, and give 
orders to, four bikers: part of the titular gang (led by Robert Dix) 
shown sporadically roaring down the highway. And on the spy side are various
 scenes with Broderick Crawford, Scott Brady, John Carradine, and the 
James Bond character played by a fittingly-suave cool-cat, John Gabriel.<br />
<br />
If you center solely on the original movie, THE FAKERS, from which the 
biker stuff was pasted on after this film was abandoned and retitled 
HELL'S BLOODY DEVILS,  it can be an entertaining, and often involving, 
exploitation fluff that only director Al Adamson could provide. But if 
you want to see a biker movie meant <i>only</i> as a biker movie, check out 
Adamson's cult classic <a href="http://www.cultfilmfreaks.com/2012/08/satans-sadists.html">SATAN'S SADISTS</a> starring HELL'S BLOODY alumni Gary Kent,

A more suitable title  for this exploitation-Western would be VALLEY OF DEATH,  as a ragtag group consisting of cowboys, hookers and a preacher get  picked off by Indians who appear from the rocks whenever the dialog runs  its course. Add to this a jazzy game-show score and Death as the  narrator, philosophizing why each character must die, sometimes even  giving it away but that's alright, because in this doomed situation:  death is the main character. A campy yet brilliant low budget Western  with some terrific actors like Scott Brady (who dies gallantly), Jim  Davis as a scumbag rapist, and John Carradine as a pistol-wielding  preacher, but none work too hard except John Bud Cardos in duo-roles as a  friendly Indian and a bad one, the latter battling star (and writer)  Robert Dix, firmly strident throughout, in the knife-wielding climax  that begins on a cliff top and winds up in a river and down a waterfall:  THE QUIET MAN be damned.</div>
