Although it's a decent enough gimmick to introduce the segment: Seeing each dead body, especially those wrapped in BODY BAGS — which means the cause isn't natural — leads creatively into three cable TV stories… The first vignette, one of two directed by Carpenter himself, is aptly titled....

But it's more than that: the mellow pace and steady acting punctuates British cinema while SCREAMTIME involves a wraparound story where two thieves insert and eject short films that they and we are viewing...And the best is the first, THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT, about creepy puppet Punch handled by an old man with a nagging wife — plus a goading stepson whose girlfriend Dione Inman becomes the "final girl" as the deaths leading to her climactic chase are predictably well-deserved... Followed by DREAMHOUSE where a married woman is tortured by images of the title location's past: This one's more cerebral and a bit plodding yet ultimately saved by a fantastic twist, which is all DO YOU BELIEVE IN FAIRIES amounts to: a dirt-bike racer housesits for two ecentric old ladies... and while a Punch puppet is the first tale's tiny killer, here it's a slew of Garden Gnome statues led by wide-eyed Kim Thomson's telekinetic Fairy Queen ghost. And it's lucky those East Coast punks actually robbed a London video store since Britain's super-cheap horror flicks are usually worthwhile: Like a broken antique clock can't tell time but is still magnificent to look at, there's plenty here to savor.

The first (and best) segment of GRINDHOUSE, teaming Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino doing their own "cheap" horror films. Plot centers on a group of survivors during an outbreak brought back from Iraq. The military is at fault as it's a send-up of the zombie genre... yet it also stands on its own merits. Freddy Rodriguez makes a decent Clint Eastwood-type. Robert Rodriguez never lets up with action but still finds time for story, and the character-development is placed perfectly within the running around, gun-fights, car chases, and mega-slayings. Bad sound, screen blotches, and missing reels are purposely added to cement the GRINDHOUSE experience (theaters that'd play several B movies in a row using cheap projectors). This makes little-to-no sense since it's a big budget CGI film, but the flaws, contrived or otherwise, don't hinder this rollercoaster ride: they only enhance it.

Seeing the wonderfully versatile Karen Black play four roles (or rather, three roles and four characters) in a TV-movie showcasing three Night Gallery style stories is a great thing. The first involves an uptight spectacle-wearing college professor who's seduced by her handsome, nefarious honor student. Without giving away the twist, it's a great episode because Karen's playing someone she's not, and you'll have to watch it a second time to truly catch all her quirks and mannerisms. 
 
The next deals with two sisters: one a crotchety sourpuss, the other a sexy blond. The twist is way too obvious. Blame the writer for this, not Karen, for she plays both roles well. 
 
The third, and most entertaining, is what the movie's known for, dealing with a woman (Black again) who purchased a foot-high spear-donning Zuni Fetish Doll. If the waist-sash falls off the doll, it comes to life. And guess what falls off the doll? The little bugger chases Karen around the apartment sounding like the Tasmanian Devil on PCP – imagine Animal from the Muppets on a killing spree and there you have it. So while this final outing is the scariest tale of the bunch – dealing with a thing too small and quick to kill but that can kill you… the first story's where Black's acting (as opposed to reacting) really shines.

Romero's outing, "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar," begins as a Film Noir tribute with a crooked wife of a dying rich man. Her young lover hypnotises her husband to sign over his inheritance. When he dies, he's not really gone since he never woke from the trance. Romero's in his realm with a zombie antagonist, but unlike NIGHT OF THE LIVING and DAWN OF THE DEAD, it isn't scary and the characters aren't interesting. But Dario Argento fares better with "The Black Cat," pitting forensic photographer Harvey Keitel against an eccentric wife and a black cat, whom he kills and... it, like the husband, won't die. Neither tales do the Poe sources complete justice, missing the master's mark of claustrophobic suspense, but the Argento story is at least enjoyable: aided by an important, and extremely sexy, cameo by Sally Kirkland.
