But by the end there’s a feeling you really know these people — although you might be torn whether to hug or slug them. Stephen King brings his favorite band AC/DC to the front lines: their barging rhythm sounds as if the trucks had their own formidable steel-plated anthem. Songs like WHO MADE WHO and HELL'S BELLS aside, impromptu blues riffs between Angus and Malcolm Young provide the true soundtrack. <br />
<br />
With so much driving around, the high octane romp practically deflates in the final stretch, although as director, before the circling trucks become the sole antagonists, King wields a nifty barrage of 70's-style crash 'em up exploitation, providing genuinely creative shots and dark humor to balance the gritty violence. <br />

Then there's Sy Richardson as Otto's secondary, more hands-on repo partner and scene-stealer Tracey Walter as a quotable pontificating mechanic who questions the universe and John Wayne's sexuality, making this an ensemble venture with classic dialogue resulting in, like all worthy cult films, memorable quotes busting from the seams, but, as Harry Dean's Bud gets more grumpy and unlikable, taking a back seat to Otto's plight as a bevy of strange "Feds" move in, the quirky charm turns convoluted...<br />
<br />
And yet this chaotic mess is very punk rock as director Alex Cox keeps the ball rolling even when the script meanders through a convoluted third act resulting in an extremely forced conclusion. For the most part, when things get too strange, you'll wish Otto remained a beer guzzling nobody at a Grocery Store... Or better yet, a newbie Repo Man with no time to lose yet all the time in the world before the inevitable plot kicked in. <br />

Other than gorgeous exterior locations and peaks into various small towns along the way, what’s there to do? </p><p>Well that’s what characters are for, but other than Martin Sheen as the grieving father, the tagalongs can be annoying: including an opinionated Canadian woman (Deborah Unger from THE GAME, yet noticeably aged) who doesn't try very hard to quit smoking; a babbling Irish travelogue writer aka the token neurotic; and an overweight jovial Dutch guy taking the comic relief mantle... </p><p>The script and direction by Emilio Estevez is hit and miss – while the shots are beautiful (mostly because the location is beautiful) and the quest is heartfelt, some of the dialogue feels contrived: reminding us it's just a movie... And each problematic situation… like Sheen getting his son’s backpack and ashes stolen… are resolved way too easily (or quenched with a breezy feel-good tune). But it's the moments when we stick closely on the face of our protagonist that it seems a worthwhile journey. After all, it’s his story, and knowing his son (in the film) is not only on his mind, but is (in real life) behind the camera: that is, if anything else, what really matters.</p>

Both are confident, drunken losers, womanizers or unlucky in love, and have no purpose whatsoever. Until they find the corpse of a slain politician and, with the aid of grumpy boss Keith David (Charlie's PLATOON alumni), they end up trying to rid of the body while being chased by the mob. If only the film didn't quickly abandon the characters, adhering to several plots taken from sources as varied as REAR WINDOW and WEEKEND AT <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">BERNIES</span>, then it might be more... comedic. But there's simply too much running around, and not enough banal <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">camaraderie</span> that any slacker flick deserves.
