Tackling Sustainability and Social Impact Issues Through Critical Dialogue at 3BL Network Effect: San Jose

Supported by <a href="https://olympics.com/ioc/partners/deloitte" target="_blank">Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner Deloitte,</a> the IOC Climate Action Awards reward innovative projects from National Olympic Committees (NOCs), International Federations (IFs) and athletes that are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of sport while inspiring the wider Olympic Movement to take action.

In addition to the four winners, the Mauritius NOC and the International Biathlon Union (IBU) have been recognised in the “Highly Commended” category for the innovative nature of their efforts to reduce emissions.

The announcement was made by the IOC and Deloitte during Climate Week NYC – an annual event that brings together business leaders, decision-makers and civil society to drive action to address climate change.

“As climate change accelerates, the Olympic Movement is accelerating its efforts to address it,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “This year’s winners of the IOC Climate Action Awards show that the Olympic Movement is taking its responsibilities seriously: reducing our impact, while inspiring others to take action. We congratulate the winners for their innovative and impactful projects that are making the world of sport more sustainable. We hope these efforts inspire others – in sport and beyond – to join the collective effort to address one of the toughest challenges our world is facing today.”

The four winners were selected from amongst the 15 finalists <a href="https://olympics.com/ioc/news/ioc-announces-finalists-for-climate-action-awards-2024" target="_blank">announced during the Olympic Games Paris 2024</a>:

In the athlete category

Imogen Grant (rowing, Great Britain) was instrumental in the launch of the Clean Water Sport Alliance to improve river health and water quality. In addition, as part of the UK National Training Centre sustainability group, Imogen has helped introduce measures such as the composting of food waste, the recycling of plastic waste and the regular testing of water quality at the national training centre in Caversham. As an ambassador for the <a href="https://theriverstrust.org/about-us" target="_blank">Rivers Trust</a>, Imogen has also contributed to over 2,400 river surveys and inspired people to participate in water-testing campaigns and initiatives, which saw over 9,000 people join September's “Big River Watch”. She has spoken at a number of events across the UK to raise awareness and educate athletes on sustainability.

Lina Taylor (beach volleyball, Bulgaria) is using her background as a scientist, Olympian and coach to help address climate change. Through her Climate Executive Coaching non-profit, Lina is helping accelerate climate action through science-based climate education, professional coaching and collaboration with professionals from government, corporations and NGOs. In just two years, Lina has worked with over 2,000 people in 30 countries and across 60 organisations. Lina is also supporting fellow athletes and NOCs, coaching them individually on climate solutions.

In the NOC category 

Swiss Olympic reduced its 2023 greenhouse gas emissions by 66 per cent compared to 2022, largely due to the fact that it chose train over plane for Games-related travel in Europe. In addition, the NOC is focusing on providing funds to its national federations and their clubs, and partner organisations, through the “Swiss Olympic Climate Fund” to support their carbon-reduction efforts. For example, the NOC has contributed to the funding of a heat pump system for a 50-year-old swimming pool in Frauenfeld, Thurgau, which has the potential to save 500 tons of CO2 annually. The Swiss Olympic Climate Fund has also helped fund an electric bus for the Ticino Group of Blind and Visually Impaired Athletes. Moving forward, the NOC is aiming to support 100 other projects across all its member and partner organisations, leading to a long-term plan of reducing emissions across all sports within Switzerland in areas such as energy, athlete mobility and construction.

In the IF category 

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has reduced water usage by an estimated 60 per cent since 2012 through the development of innovative “Dry Turf” technology, which reduces the amount of water needed for elite hockey pitches. This new technology has already led to a 40 per cent reduction of water use between London 2012 and Tokyo 2020, and what is estimated to have been a further 20 per cent reduction for Paris 2024. The ultimate aim is to replace the 2,000 or so water-based artificial hockey pitches globally with dry turfs, saving approximately 7.6 billion litres of water per year. The FIH is also developing other innovative solutions, including “self-wetting balls”, which release water at the point of contact between the ball, the surface and the stick, to enable the sport to be played at the highest level on dry turf. The project is part of the FIH’s wide-ranging sustainability strategy and comprehensive carbon reduction and mitigation plan, which includes the first-ever carbon-zero artificial turf, inaugurated at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and the global “Give Back to Forest” tree-planting programme.

The following two finalists have been recognised in the “Highly Commended” category:

The Mauritius National Olympic Committee has developed a comprehensive carbon footprint reduction plan focusing on travel and procurement, achieving a 40 per cent reduction in 2023 from its 2022 baseline. Key initiatives include a local community-based project which has encouraged around 50,000 people to switch from plastic bottles to glass bottles in order to reduce plastic waste, and the design of a “bioclimatic gym” that uses sustainably sourced PEFC-certified wood, a self-sufficient waste system, climate-resilient architecture and 100 per cent renewable energy and natural air ventilation instead of carbon-heavy air conditioning – the first of its kind in Mauritius.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has been working with TV broadcasters, in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union, to measure their carbon footprint during the 2023/24 World Cup season and identify initiatives they can implement to reduce emissions in the future, with the aim of providing learnings for other sports. The IBU is the first Olympic IF that has looked at systematically reducing its major events’ broadcasting emissions – an area that is often deemed difficult to address. The project is part of the IBU’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes a commitment to reduce the sport’s climate impact by 50 per cent. The strategy takes into account the IBU’s own activities, but also IBU events and the activities of member federations, partners, sponsors, media and fans.

Through our annual employee culture and engagement survey, we gather confidential feedback to learn and act on how we can continue to create and improve our culture and the employee experience. All levels of management receive aggregated results of strengths and opportunities to develop an action plan to address their team’s needs. Understanding and acting on that feedback has been worthwhile as in our 2024 survey we achieved our highest overall score in the previous four years ― exceeding the national benchmark by 6%. We sustained or improved scores for all questions outpacing the national benchmark by seven basis points.

Our Wellness Community of Interest and our Accessibility Employee Resource Group provide a social way for employees to connect with each other about health and wellness while also providing useful learning and educational sessions.

Employee health and safety is always paramount to our business and to our employees’ well-being. We encourage employees to participate in health and wellness initiatives, and actively work to prevent workplace hazards.

Not surprisingly, the good our company does begins with our employees. Our employees embrace SAIC’s legacy of community involvement and philanthropy. Giving both their time and money, our employees volunteered 29,000 hours in FY24, an increase of 10% over the previous year and almost 40% over FY22.

Including employee contributions, SAIC donated just over $3.2 million in FY23 to causes important to our mission.

SAIC serves the communities in which we live and work through our lasting relationships with community partners. We primarily contribute to our four focus areas: military and veteran resiliency, STEM education, community wellness and diversity. We added a diversity and inclusion focus this year as diverse and inclusive companies are more innovative and deliver stronger business results.

Building Homes for Heroes  
To honor our veteran relationships, SAIC partners with Building Homes for Heroes, a national nonprofit organization that builds and modifies houses and then gifts them mortgage-free to injured veterans and their families. By the end of FY24, we helped donate 16 homes to our military heroes through this partnership, which began in 2013 and continues into our current fiscal year with one additional home already delivered and two others scheduled for later in the year.

For over 20 years, a senior executive of SAIC has served on the board of directors of the USO. The company supports their annual fundraising gala that provides acts of caring, comfort and connection for America’s military and their families. Each year, SAIC employees support USO’s Project Elf and provide holiday gifts for hundreds of junior enlisted children every year. In 2023, we provided 250 military families with gifts to help make their holidays brighter.

Since 2017, SAIC has provided STEM scholarships through the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, created to ensure that the United States maintains leadership in science and technology by supporting some of the very best STEM college students. To date, SAIC has provided 22 scholarships in helping to inspire future generations. SAIC serves on the Neil Armstrong® Award of Excellence selection committee, an award given to an Astronaut Scholar Alum that exemplifies personal character and professional achievement mirroring the core values of its namesake, Neil Armstrong.

SAIC supports the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering’s mission of educating – tuition-free – the cyber technology and engineering workforce of the future. Today, SAIC continues its financial and community support for the school and its students pursuing STEM education. In 2022, SAIC committed $1.5 million towards Alabama’s leading magnet schools in STEM education.

Feeding America  
We’re in our tenth consecutive year of helping combat hunger in America through our partnership with Feeding America. During Hunger Action Month in September 2023, SAIC raised $311,908 with the help of donations and fundraising efforts by SAIC employees - an equivalent of 3.1 million meals for people facing food insecurity.

SAIC employees embraced the company’s Give A Meal Team Challenge, participating in a variety of activities that included events to raise funds, along with volunteering at their local food banks. Their generosity, time and dedication resulted in more than $131,000 in direct contributions, which the company matched. Over the past 10 years, SAIC has helped provide approximately 25 million meals to people in need through our partnership the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization. For every dollar given, Feeding America provides at least 10 meals to those facing hunger.

Diversity and Inclusion

Thurgood Marshall College Fund  
SAIC supports the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community offering financial assistance to outstanding students attending one of funds member-schools that include 47 publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). In partnership for four years, SAIC works with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to help provide scholarships and research initiatives as the organization is a source for top employers seeking talent for competitive internships and good jobs. SAIC CEO Toni Townes-Whitley has served on their board of directors since 2019.

This milestone is the latest KeyBank has achieved since launching this program in July 2023.

The KeyBank Neighbors First Credit1 is a Special Purpose Credit Program that provides $5,000 toward closing costs and other pre-paid fees that may come with financing a new, owner-occupied home to homebuyers for the purchase of eligible properties. Additional costs include mortgage, flood and hazard insurance, escrow deposit, real estate taxes, and per diem interest for eligible properties.

<a href="https://www.key.com/content/dam/kco/documents/personal/2024_financial_mobility_survey.pdf" target="_blank">KeyBank's 2024 Financial Mobility Survey</a> found that many Americans believe homeownership is out of reach due to rising costs. Of those people (20%) who are not currently in the market to purchase a home and haven’t purchased one in the past year, 69% believe the dream of owning a home is not very attainable.

“At a time when many feel they simply can’t afford a home, KeyBank’s efforts, specifically with our Neighbors First Credit, are erasing doubt and helping our clients see what is possible when they partner with their bank,” said Dale Baker, Head of Home Lending at KeyBank. “Whether they are looking to buy a new home or improve the home they are in, KeyBank is committed to working with our clients to help them achieve their dreams and goals.”

The <a href="https://www.key.com/personal/promo/home-loans-lines/keybank-neighbors-first-credit.html?ppc=2307_neighborsfirst_alias" target="_blank">KeyBank Homebuyer Credit</a>2 provides up to $5,000 in credits toward closing costs and other pre-paid fees that may come with financing a new home to homebuyers for the purchase of eligible properties in eligible communities. The Homebuyer Credit launched in September 2022. Through this program, Key has funded more than $2.4 million in credits, helping 533 clients.

In addition, the <a href="https://www.key.com/personal/home-loans-lines/key-opportunities-home-equity-loan.html" target="_blank">Key Opportunities Home Equity Loan</a>3 provides affordable terms for borrowers with qualifying properties to refinance their primary residence to a lower interest rate, consolidate debt, finance home improvements, or tap into their equity when needed. This loan features a fixed rate, with no origination fee, and a first or second lien option for loans up to $100,000. Since the program began on March 1, 2023, through September 19, 2024, KeyBank funded $13 million in loans, helping 259 clients secure loans for their primary home in designated communities.

For more than a decade, <a href="https://www.ace4change.org/" target="_blank">Alliance for Community Empowerment</a> (ACE) has assisted thousands of individuals in overcoming barriers by addressing the core issues facing their low-income communities through education, workforce development and other support services.

The San Fernando Valley, California-based ACE staff has grown to 65 employees but the team occasionally needs outside support that it might not otherwise have if it weren’t for a capacity building resource like <a href="https://www.catchafire.org/" target="_blank">Catchafire</a>, which facilitates access to volunteers with professional skills looking to support community development leaders and nonprofits who may be under-resourced and overextended.

ACE <a href="https://www.catchafire.org/organizations/alliance-for-community-empowerment_70678/" target="_blank">began using Catchafire</a> in 2022 and has tapped into resources for various projects ranging from human resources to change management and new data system implementation to marketing. The marketing expert’s volunteer contribution was significant enough that ACE hired the volunteer full-time, and the nonprofit is now in the process of further expanding its marketing department.

“For smaller nonprofits like ACE, partnerships like these can be a lifeline because they provide access to highly skilled professionals who can offer expertise that may otherwise be out of reach,” said ACE CEO and founder Michelle Miranda. “Utilizing volunteers and resources has provided our team with comprehensive project management skills and training, helped us develop our leaders, and given us guidance on implementing and navigating changes.”

<a href="https://www.usbank.com/corporate-and-commercial-banking/solutions/credit-and-financing/impact-finance.html" target="_blank">U.S. Bancorp Impact Finance</a>, the community investment and tax credit division of U.S. Bank, became a thread in ACE’s story by providing grants and capacity building to support aligned organizations like Catchafire.

“We’re pleased to support programs that give back and bridge gaps for nonprofits like ACE,” said Torrence Moore, managing director of Impact Finance’s Business Impact Group. “Success stories like this one are a great example of the impact this can have on organizations and the communities they serve.”

Miranda said connecting with a volunteer who had extensive marketing experience allowed ACE to refine communication strategies and improve how it supports individuals.

“U.S. Bank’s collaboration with Catchafire not only supports nonprofits in achieving their missions but also fosters long-term sustainability by helping us build the foundational structures needed for growth,” she said. “This type of collaboration is vital in empowering smaller organizations to make a more significant difference in the communities they serve.”
