From a mesmerizing storyteller, the gripping search for a missing World War II crew, their bomber plane, and their legacy.

In the fall of 1944, a massive American bomber carrying eleven men vanished over the Pacific islands of Palau, leaving a trail of mysteries. According to mission reports from the Army Air Forces, the plane crashed in shallow water—but when investigators went to find it, the wreckage wasn’t there. Witnesses saw the crew parachute to safety, yet the airmen were never seen again. Some of their relatives whispered that they had returned to the United States in secret and lived in hiding. But they never explained why.

For sixty years, the U.S. government, the children of the missing airmen, and a maverick team of scientists and scuba divers searched the islands for clues. With every clue they found, the mystery only deepened.

Now, in a spellbinding narrative, Wil S. Hylton weaves together the true story of the missing men, their final mission, the families they left behind, and the real reason their disappearance remained shrouded in secrecy for so long. This is a story of love, loss, sacrifice, and faith—of the undying hope among the families of the missing, and the relentless determination of scientists, explorers, archaeologists, and deep-sea divers to solve one of the enduring mysteries of World War II.

History In The Making
I thought that this was a factual account of WW II Planes, and their crews, Missing In Action in the South Pacific. Then the book morphed into the history of MIAs and how they now connect remains with real people and their families. The History of the MIA Project, might have been a more descriptive, but less emotional title. Excellent read; and, an even better gift to a family member who served in WWII....

This is a remarkable story on many levels. Author Hylton has given us a story which is part documentary, part war story, and part ghost tale. Detail is everywhere, from grieving family members to the missing flight crews and then to the archaeologists themselves. Throughout all, Hylton shows all of the people involved as extremely human-- each with fears, faults, and hopes. Although "Vanished" is totally non-fiction it reads like a classic mystery novel, with suspense and surprises throughout. This is 265 pages of wonderful storytelling. Much of it is compelling, and part of it is heartbreaking. "Vanished" should also be used as motivation to continue these types of searches for those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those with interest in WWII or archaeology should find "Vanished" as both intriguing and inspirational reading. A very good read.

On September 1, 1944, an American B-24 bomber was shot down over the Palau islands in the Pacific. Three men managed to bail out before the plane crashed. The others perished in the crash. In "Vanished", author Wil S. Hylton tells a remarkable tale of one man's journey to discover the remains of the plane and the men entombed within.

Pat Scannon is the name of the man responsible for the search. Over a period of many years, Scannon and his crew of scuba divers, sonar experts, and scientists made several visits to the Palau islands in search of the missing B-24. Each time Scannon and his crew went to search for the plane, obstacles kept appearing. But Scannon didn't let these obstacles deter him from his ultimate goal of providing closure for the families of the crew members. In a story that reads like a novel, Hylton describes each of Scannon's visits and the results obtained.

Not just focusing on the search for the missing plane, Hylton also vividly describes the brutal action that took place during the time of the B-24's disappearance. The Palau islands were viewed as a potential staging area for attacks by the Japanese against MacArthur's drive to retake the Philippines. This point is hotly debated, as many saw the Palaus as an unnecessary operation. The battles fought here, especially on Peleliu, were some of the bloodiest of the war. Bombing missions were ordered to neutralize the islands. The missing B-24 was shot down on a mission over these islands.

I found "Vanished" to be an excellent read. The story of Scannon's search for the missing bomber is riveting, and each trip Scannon made is described in great detail. The discussion about the Palaus campaign is told in frightening terms relating to tremendous casualties suffered on both sides.

I recommend this book to readers of World War II history and to those who enjoy books about searching for missing relics. The story is gripping and the end result is uplifting.

I like to write my reviews in a bottom-line-first style, so here it is: "Vanished" is impeccably researched, satisfyingly thorough, a pleasure to read, and well worth your time.

Author Wil S. Hylton effortlessly weaves many very different elements into a fascinating narrative. He writes so descriptively that the reader can smell the jungle, touch the warmth of the sea and feel the long-buried pain of families who have lived for decades with what seems to be an unsolvable mystery: what happened to the fathers, sons, husbands and brothers shot down in an oft-forgotten campaign of World War II?

America prides itself on bringing all its fallen warriors home. But the sheer scope of the Pacific War, the difficulty of finding, much less excavating, all of the wrecks, and dealing with flawed memories and inaccurate or incomplete records made it almost impossible to account for those lost in WWII. "Vanished" is the story of one man's determination to find and bring home as many of these men as he can.

This book would be interesting enough for the searches themselves. What sets it apart is the author's exploration of how families are affected in heartbreaking ways by never knowing the fate of the missing. The uncertainty prevents many from ever starting the journey toward healing.

And to its theme...may our lost soldiers, airmen, Marines, sailors and submariners from all wars rest in peace wherever they may be. Unfound or unfindable...we will not forget you.

I have always enjoyed WW2 history, especially the air-wars. But what I truly enjoy about this period are the personal stories and really feeling the depth of their personalities and the lives they were living and the lives they hoped to live. Hylton has assembled an amazing adventure they just emerges you in a passion to restore sons and husbands to their families and where boys essentially lived as larger than life men.

A great read for anyone who likes mixing treasure hunts with intrigue, mystery, suspense, hope and heroism.

Sixty years after the loss of a US bomber during World War II over Palau in Micronesia, the records have been unearthed, history has been researched and the next generation of the missing aviators’ families have hope in their hearts to find the answers to what happened to their lost relatives.

This is the story of one man’s passion and determination – sparked by the chance discovery of a propellor blade on a remote coral reef – and a whole host of characters all united in finding the truth.

Great boys own stuff, made all the more poignant by the fact that it is true and that there are still countless Missing In Action files which still need closure.
