Since this is the final volume we get five introductions. One for each of the three storylines from people involved in the Modesty Blaise Radio Dramas Plus two in the beginning. One from Peter O’Donnell’s Grandson and one from Peter himself done before his death.
The writing from O’Donnell is quite good with lots of plot and characterization. I found the middle story to be the weakest mainly because it borrows from a very famous source. The Romero art is quite nice and he does a good job on putting nudity in each of the three strips to remind us that these appeared in the U.K. where nudity in the papers is a tradition.
“The Last Aristocrat” is a delight in that it mixes the colorful Guido the Jinx into a very tense suspense story about a Horrific Weapon of War. This is Guido’s 4th appearance and the Reckless Reporter continues to cause humorous situations with beautiful girlfriend. They plan a wedding which of course is a ploy for more spying. This story has one of the most defining moments of the series. Willie Garvin (Modesty’s right hand man) asks Modesty to take off her bra, which she immediately does with no questions asked. Then Willie promptly makes a weapon out of it. Those several panels sum up a typical for a Modesty Adventure from the past 38 years.
“The Killing Game” is a little weak in that it borrows heavily from the plot of the Story and Movie called “The Most Dangerous Game”. Granted this story about humans being hunted by big game hunters for sport has been borrowed many other times. And to be honest seems like a natural fit for Modesty.
“ The Zombie” is the final story of this book and the series. The story focuses on a girl who is the flip side of Modesty. Leda is raised to be a killing machine like Modesty but without the love and friendship of Willie Garvin and her friends. In the beginning of the story there is some dialogue about how Willie has changed Modesty over the course of their adventures and made her a happier person. After the adventure ends we get about a weeks worth of material about Modesty planning to give away a vast fortune and go on an adventure just for the fun of it. Of course Willie goes too. Thus ending one of the best Adventure Comic Strip that ever ran.
My Highest Recommendation.
I have now had the enormous pleasure of reading/re-reading ever single strip from this magical series (none of which I remembered) from beginning to end, yet I am also sad that there are no more for me to look forward to!
Thank-you to every-one involved in the re-issue of these wonderful stories and especially to everyone at Titan Books Ltd. And thank-you to Peter O'Donnell for writing such uplifting stories about Modesty, Willie et al and all the artists for bringing them to life.
