Peter O’Donnell began his career working on pre-World War Two comic strips. During the 1950’s he became involved with strip cartoons and created the revolutionary series Modesty Blaise, which would be syndicated in more than 42 countries. The strip led to a series of bestselling novels, all published by Souvenir Press: Modesty Blaise, Sabre Tooth, I,Lucifer, The Impossible Virgin, Pieces of Modesty, A Taste for Death, The Silver Mistress, Dragon’s Claw, The Xanadu Talisman, The Night of the Morningstar, Dead Man’s Handle and his final collection of stories about Modesty, Cobra Trap.

This is it the Final Book of Titan’s 30 Matching Volumes collecting the entire 38 year run of Modesty Blaise Comic Strips. That’s 95 storylines. They started with strips printed in 1963 and ended in 2001. The three storylines collected here are from 1999 to 2001. Before some one mentions it the Dark Angels Graphic Novel by Peter O’ Donnell and Enric Romero it is sadly not collected here. Commissioned for the Scandinavian market the only English language printing has been in the long out of print Comics Revue #200 Magazine.

Since this is the final volume we get five introductions. One for each of the three storylines from people involved in the Modesty Blaise Radio Dramas Plus two in the beginning. One from Peter O’Donnell’s Grandson and one from Peter himself done before his death.

The writing from O’Donnell is quite good with lots of plot and characterization. I found the middle story to be the weakest mainly because it borrows from a very famous source. The Romero art is quite nice and he does a good job on putting nudity in each of the three strips to remind us that these appeared in the U.K. where nudity in the papers is a tradition.

“The Last Aristocrat” is a delight in that it mixes the colorful Guido the Jinx into a very tense suspense story about a Horrific Weapon of War. This is Guido’s 4th appearance and the Reckless Reporter continues to cause humorous situations with beautiful girlfriend. They plan a wedding which of course is a ploy for more spying. This story has one of the most defining moments of the series. Willie Garvin (Modesty’s right hand man) asks Modesty to take off her bra, which she immediately does with no questions asked. Then Willie promptly makes a weapon out of it. Those several panels sum up a typical for a Modesty Adventure from the past 38 years.

“The Killing Game” is a little weak in that it borrows heavily from the plot of the Story and Movie called “The Most Dangerous Game”. Granted this story about humans being hunted by big game hunters for sport has been borrowed many other times. And to be honest seems like a natural fit for Modesty.

“ The Zombie” is the final story of this book and the series. The story focuses on a girl who is the flip side of Modesty. Leda is raised to be a killing machine like Modesty but without the love and friendship of Willie Garvin and her friends. In the beginning of the story there is some dialogue about how Willie has changed Modesty over the course of their adventures and made her a happier person. After the adventure ends we get about a weeks worth of material about Modesty planning to give away a vast fortune and go on an adventure just for the fun of it. Of course Willie goes too. Thus ending one of the best Adventure Comic Strip that ever ran.

My Highest Recommendation.

Always like Modesty Blaise since I started in 1980. Too bad that all this comic strips that came out became the collector's editions and cost more to purchase. I would buy them all if it was not too pricey.

Modesty Blaise is almost the only "comic strip" I still follow after all my decades. She and Willie, such engaging and fully realized characters are rare to otherwise nonexistent. O'Donnell himself was a rarity, able to render his people and stories equally effective in prose and in illustrated form. It's only sad because these are the very last. In prose, Modestly and Willie die heroically. In illustrated form they ride off into the sunset, to pursue a dream from an earlier story in prose. It's a nice touch, and a sad farewell.

I've collected MB since 1986. These volumes are essential and nice and big so you can drink in every detail of Holloway and Romero's art. Huzzah!

I was 13 when Modesty started appearing in the London Evening Standard and would have read only some of the strips in the paper brought home by may father each evening as I was at boarding school/on holiday for part of each year. I started work when I was 17 and would have read every strip from thereon except again when I was on holiday!

I have now had the enormous pleasure of reading/re-reading ever single strip from this magical series (none of which I remembered) from beginning to end, yet I am also sad that there are no more for me to look forward to!

Thank-you to every-one involved in the re-issue of these wonderful stories and especially to everyone at Titan Books Ltd. And thank-you to Peter O'Donnell for writing such uplifting stories about Modesty, Willie et al and all the artists for bringing them to life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Liebevoll gemacht, gut erzählt

This concludes the run of Modesty Blaise. I will miss it. Stylish, intelligent characters whose loyalty to each other was unshakeable.

Peter O'Donnel's 'Modesty Blaise' needs to be rediscovered by more people as these graphic novels are so entertaining and probably underrated in the marketplace. With all things retro taking off now I can imagine that there will be further re-prints at some point. These are some of the greatest movies never made.
