Ski photography competition – in pictures

Four of the world’s best action sports photographers were invited to Killer Loop Click on the Mountain, a photography competition in the Courmayeur Mont Blanc area. Accompanied by a team of professional snowboarders, skiers and an Alpine guide, they had four days to shoot a portfolio. See more

This has been making the rounds on the internet in the last few days, for good reason.  It’s a remarkable tribute to “women’s work,” appearing both agonizingly painful and stunningly beautiful.  

The work is a conscious inversion of gender roles, by applying a traditionally feminine craft in a way which exemplifies the traditionally male values of strength and suppressing any expression of pain.

This is not the world of the systems hacker. When you debug a distributed system or an OS kernel, you do it Texas-style. You gather some mean, stoic people, people who have seen things die, and you get some primitive tools, like a compass and a rucksack and a stick that’s pointed on one end, and you walk into the wilderness and you look for trouble, possibly while using chewing tobacco.
