Small Business Spotlight: National Military Family Association
Several nationwide companies like +Booz Allen Hamilton and +USAA have found innovative ways to hire and retain the talented military spouses serving here at home, but what about small businesses? Today we’re speaking with Joyce Wessel Raezer, executive director of the +National Military Family Association, about the strides her small business has made in hiring spouses. Founded in 1969, the National Military Family Association is the leading non-profit organization focusing on issues important to military families. The NMFA currently employs 25 military spouses on its staff of 32 employees. Proving that businesses of all sizes can help to address the military spouse unemployment rate of 26%, the NMFA made a point of joining much larger companies in committing to the Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign. In recognition of their efforts to not only help, but employ military families, the NMFA won the 2012 +Capital One Award for Excellence in Small Business Veteran and Military Spouse Employment. #VetNet #Veterans #MilSpouse

Currently Mark is the CEO and Founder of MyGigline, an online technology startup focused on solving the communication problem of available resources for the military and veteran community. Unlike other websites that often overwhelm users with thousands of resources, MyGigline personalizes the military jouney by tailoring specific events, services and special programs according to an individual’s location, eligibility and personal interests. Mark holds a BA in Human Services and Public Policy from the University of Delaware and a MA in Management and Leadership from Webster University. Recently he was chosen as 1 or 30 veteran owned companies to attend the Inc 500/5000 conference as a special delegate. Mark has also received a certification in entrepreneurship from Syracuse University, completed the 12-week VETransfer accelerator program and was accepted into the TechStars Rising Stars program. At our Opportunity Recognition Presentation, Mark will tell us his story, show an exclusive overview of the upcoming MyGigline beta, and tell you about the lessons he’s learned while entering the tech startup world. This will be an unstructured presentation and Mark’s goal is to answer your questions. However, he will also provide some tips on how to test your business idea, develop a business model and the importance of customer development. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to open a franchise, want to be the next Facebook, or open an ice cream shop these tips and the way you can use technology will be relevant to your venture.

An Exploration of Combat Veterans' Experiences as they Transition to Civilian Employment Using Higher Education
Please join Sarah Minnis, PhD as she discusses her dissertation entitled: "A PHENOMENOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF COMBAT VETERANS’ EXPERIENCES AS THEY TRANSITION TO CIVILIAN EMPLOYMENT USING HIGHER EDUCATION AS CAREER DEVELOPMENT" Dr. Minnis will discuss her findings surrounding those veterans whose military occupation specialty (MOS) has no civilian employment equivalent, such as veterans of infantry, have limited technical options for post-military work. The job they have done has no civilian equivalent, though they do possess knowledge and skills that can be assets to them in civilian work. Because of this they may choose to attend institutions of higher education as a way to develop additional skills and gain knowledge to make them more competitive for the civilian workforce. Additionally, many veterans want to take advantage of the generous education benefits they earned to find a new career path. For these veterans, the career development transition they experience in higher education may have a significant impact on their civilian employment potential and viability as candidates in their employment searches.

Though it's frustrating to figure the details out, there is a lot of information out there about how to start a Government contracting business or become a consultant - but nothing on how to get the customers to actually buy your services or product. Whether you're a business owner or a consultant, as a veteran, you have a network and expertise that can be put to use to win millions in contracts - if you know the right steps to take. Never before has the Government pushed so hard to award contracts to small businesses, and Veteran-Owned Small Businesses are at the top of their list. In this webinar, Kathy Borkoski, a Government business development expert responsible for winning over $4B in Government contracts, will walk you through the actions you need to be taking today to set you and your company up for success in Government contracting. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Kathy was lucky to have the opportunity to find her personal leadership style in a high-stakes environment as a Navy diver and bomb technician. Following her military career, she became a stunt double in Hollywood for two years, where she went from a complete unknown to attending the Oscars of stunt doubling in less than a year through dedicated networking. Combining her love of calculated risk, problem solving, and networking, she is now the VP of Trident Proposal Management, providing large and small businesses with a strategic execution plan to win more Government contracts.

Social Entrepreneurship Series: Hangout #2 - Internal Operations - Structure, Organization, Capacity Building, and Governance
This one hour hangout will bridge the what happens first question and the how do we deliver on the mission question. In the start-up phase of any organization, it is critical that an organization develop a strong mission, vision, and values statement to be successful. However, it is vital that an organization clarify its impact to establish the most effective programming, governing and staffing structures to be sustainable and relevant. More and more, funders addressing social purposes are targeting their investments beyond ‘charitable giving’ to investing in ‘sustainable community impact’. After establishing a clear mission for a social enterprise, aspiring social entrepreneurs need to focus attention on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of their business. This includes making strategic decisions about the infrastructure of the enterprise based upon the type of demonstrable social change it intends to achieve. Presenters: Lisa M. Fasolo-Frishman, Maxwell School, Civic Engagement, Moderator Lisa Fasolo Frishman has fifteen years of experience working in nonprofits and foundations. Her current appointment is as a Program Coordinator for the Maxwell program in Citizenship and Civic Engagement. Prior to working at Syracuse University, she served as a major gift officer for The Denver Foundation, and was the Executive Director of Social Venture Partners Denver, which provides grants and technical assistance on a wide range of organizational structure issues to Denver nonprofits. Her expertise includes nonprofit management, fundraising, donor stewardship, and volunteer management. Francisco Gonima, Consultant-Non-Profit Development Francisco Gonima is currently the Owner of Francisco Gonima Executive Coaching and Strategy, and the President of Blacktie San Antonio. Francisco’s previous work experience includes over 8 years in upper management of the American Red Cross, where he was responsible for emergency management and preparedness. Top Five DIY Public Relations Tools For Startups
Please join us for a hangout where will will be discussing the Top Five DIY Public Relations Tools For Startups (Hint: Three Are Completely Free). There are plenty of marketing tools, gadgets, and experts demanding people's attention. Trajectory Communications experts Lori Volkman and Richard Johnson walk you through the tools you can use right now to get your business heard and seen in a crowded marketplace. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Johnson (Ret., USAF), who recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 21 years, is the Vice President of Trajectory Communications and an award-winning communicator. During his career he worked at the highest levels of government developing communication plans and campaigns with senior members of the Department of Defense, Department of State, and Air Force leadership. He has a passion for teaching others how to get the most out of their messages and media engagements. He was the primary author of Congressional testimony presented to the House Armed Services Committee on Remotely Piloted Vehicles and also penned several diplomatic cables to Middle East Air Chiefs. While serving as the team lead for Media Operations at the Pentagon, Johnson skillfully worked with the Pentagon Press Corps and senior defense leaders to provide timely and accurate information regarding a number of sensitive programs and platforms spanning space, nuclear operations, the intelligence and operational communities, and personnel issues. He is a graduate of the University of Arkansas with a degree in Journalism, and a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from National Defense Intelligence College. Prior to joining the Air Force he was a general assignment reporter and photojournalist for the ABC and NBC affiliates in Northwest Arkansas. Ms. Lori Volkman is a military spouse and career deputy prosecutor turned entrepreneur whose military family writings have received national attention from Reader's Digest, the New York Times at War, Newsweek, CNN, NBC News, and CBS News. She helped originate the Military Spouse JD Network as their Communications Director, joining military spouse attorneys across the country into an organization over 1000 strong that have changed the laws in ten states to increase portability of law licenses for military families. Eventually her love for that work turned into an entirely new career for Volkman, whose expertise was in strategic planning and communications for elected officials and government executives. She now helps corporations who are struggling to compete for highly-skilled employees in the war for talent as CEO of Trajectory Communications. Volkman also created MSCEO, the Military Spouse CEO Experience for entrepreneurs attending the Association of the US Army's annual defense expo, and assisted in the creation of Homefront Rising, a bipartisan political training for military spouses interested in running for Congress.
