Capcom‘s Street Fighters are turning in their fierce kicks and quarter-circle punches for a deck of cards.
The Japanese publisher revealed that it’s working on Street Fighter: Battle Combination, a mobile title that has players laying down attack cards to assault their opponent, as first spotted by Siliconera (via Polygon). Capcom is planning to release the game in Japan in the near future for both Android and iOS.
We’ve reached out to Capcom to ask for more information about the release and a potential North American localization, and we’ll update this post with the company’s response. It’s also unknown if the game will debut as a free-to-play title or not.
Battle Combination has players building a team of five fighters to face off against other five-character teams. Familiar faces like Ryu , Cammy, and Chun-Li are returning for this more tactical take on fighting in the street. During the rounds of play, gamers must lay down cards that represent attacks for each fighter. Gamers can play certain combinations of attacks to string together combos for extreme damage.
The idea of Battle Combination is to take a Street Fighter match and slow it down to a turn-based pace while retaining the core essence of the franchise.
The mobile battler will feature three modes: A Stage Mode, a Versus Mode, and a Formidable Foe Battle Mode. While Capcom didn’t explain what each of these game types are for, it’s likely that the Versus Mode will enable players to jump online to fight one another.
In Japan, publishers and developers are bringing more of their biggest franchises to mobile. Earlier this week, publisher Namco Bandai expressed its desire to release a Dark Souls game on smartphones and tablets.
Up to this point, Capcom has focused on porting games like Street Fighter IV, Dead Rising, and Resident Evil 4 to the iOS. Battle Combination is seemingly its first attempt to take an established franchise and mold it into something specifically built for mobile gaming.
