This WCRP newsletter offers highlights from the recent session of WCRP's Joint Scientific Committee and brief discussion of recent topics and actions relevant to the WCRP community.  We address specifically the various temperature targets emerging from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) processes.  We introduce the WCRP community to YESS - Young Earth System Scientists - and to several new staff members.  We include alert notices for upcoming meeting deadlines.

WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Meeting


The 37th Session of the WCRP JSC (JSC-37) took place from 25 to 27 April 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual meeting brought together 68 leading scientists, climate experts and planning staff from 18 countries to assess and guide WCRP activities. All the presentations are available here.

Highlights of the meeting include WCRP endorsement of two new Grand Challenges on 'Carbon Feedbacks in the Climate System' and on 'Near-term Climate Prediction', endorsement of the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) network, a reorganization of regional climate activities and discussions regarding plans for the coming year. Thoughts on climate models and global temperature targets

David Carlson shares his thoughts on climate models and temperature targets. While as a climate research community we do not tune our modeling efforts to achieve specific temperature targets, we must be aware that political interest in these targets is high and growing. David shares a letter from Christiana Figueres to WCRP, which attests to the political interest in 1.5°C and 2°C goals. However we proceed, the time for action is now. Read more here.

WCRP: Fostering future leaders

WCRP encourages current and future leadership in climate science, fostering a sustainable climate research community to empower long-term achievements. To this end, particular efforts are made to engage Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in WCRP activities. Read more about how WCRP works with ECRs here.

New staff

We welcome the following new staff members. Iréne Lake (left) is the new Director of the WCRP International Project Office for CORDEX, hosted by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Ms. Jing Li (middle) joined the International CLIVAR Project Office in Qingdao, China, as a Staff Scientist. Narelle van der Wel (right) joined the WCRP Joint Planning Staff as a Communications Consultant.
