Book Overview

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, this unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist blends teen angst and unspeakable horrors into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins...

So Camp!

Loved this, very campy! Creates amazing imagery of the 80s, very big stranger things vibes

Such a fun yet spooky book!

I absolutely loved this book! It perfectly captures the nostalgia of middle school and teenage adolescence while also being very scary at the same time! The story follows two friends, Abby and Gretchen as they embark on their journey through middle school up until their junior year of high school, the present. All is well for the friends, they’re stellar students their friend group is close, and they get to enjoy all of the lavish things in life, since most of their friends being rich! But something strange happens when playing in the woods at a sleepover goes wrong. Gretchen suddenly goes missing and is lost for hours in the woods, Abby chasing after her to find her. It’s dark. After stumbling around Abby discovers an abandoned building in the middle of the woods. All she can hear is a man whispering her name, beckoning her inside.

Gotta read this book

Such a fun read. It gives you all the 80s vibes that you want and love. So funny and such a good book. Totally recommend!

Nostalgia!

(Nostalgic horror) This is like everything about my childhood in a horror movie satire. The MC is my age - born just 3 months before me, so I related completely to everthing about her life: the skate-party birthday, the izod shirts, the summer mix tape, the mall corn dogs, the best friend possessed by a demon... oh no wait, not that last part. This was everything for 80s children, for horror fans, for those who loved Stranger Things. If any of those describe you, then read this!

Gotta love the 80's

If you grew up in the 80's this is a walk down memory lane....loved the chapters being song titles. Lots of humor, some horror as well....good read.

We love the eighties, possession and all!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It’s the eighties baby, and best friends Abby and Gretchen are cruising through life together. Big hair, loud makeup, and sneaking around with friends, all the typical teen past times. One evening, everything goes horribly wrong. What should have been an innocent bit of skinny dipping fun with friends turns into a frantic hunt for Gretchen. After a panicky evening, the friends are reunited and it seems all is well. Until it isn’t. Bizarre behavior and ever building horrors threaten to tear their friend group and families apart, and destroy best friends that were years in the making. Abby is having NONE of that, and fights to reclaim her friend from whatever has taken her away to this dark and horrible place. Five stars, fun as hell, great story, and characters I felt like I could really connect to. A must read Hendrix novel!

Hilarious

Such a fun read, gave me all the vibes a good 80's movie would.

Funny, Moving Horror Story

Abby has been friends with Gretchen since they were ten years old. Now high school students, they have traded in their ET posters and roller skates for the mall and parties in the woods. After one such escapade, however, Gretchen begins to act strangely. Very, very strangely. With the peculiarities mounting and the weirdness surrounding Gretchen becoming more and more disturbing, Abby must face the truth: Her friend is possessed, and Abby is the only one who can help her. Grady Hendrix is certainly one of the bright lights (if that phrase is appropriate) in modern horror fiction. His previous book, Horrorstör, was an intelligent, hilarious, and creepy haunted house tale. In My Best Friend’s Exorcism, we find out what would happen if The Heathers also featured demonic possession. Here, Hendrix has again left his unique imprint on the genre, taking us into a friendship sundered by satan and adolescence, which really are much the same thing. If you’re a horror genre fan, but have been looking for something a bit off the beaten path, something campy and fun while still maintaining creep factor, Grady Hendrix should definitely top your TBR.
