Now that our Mum planters are dried & frozen, I hacked them into some simple but beautiful outdoor Christmas planters! Here’s how I did it, and how you can too with only a few supplies and about 10 minutes.

The soil and roots of old planters from Fall actually make an excellent base for some Christmas urns full of greenery. Simply prune your old Mums out of their pots, and keep the roots and soil in the pot for your winter arrangement.

I used a bundle of mixed greens from my grocery store for this arrangement – pine, cedar & spruce – but you could also go for a scavenger hunt in your yard for some greenery to use.

First, I put a block of floral foam on the soil in the center of my pot, and then I placed on of my indoor / outdoor lanterns on top to give the arrangement some height. Next, I pushed stems of pine evenly around the pot into the soil. Next, I added a layer of cedar stems, and finally I added the spruce stems. You might have to trim the stems to get the look you want. Finally, I added a few dogwood branches beside the lantern for even more height to my arrangement, and placed a bright red bow near the front.

I think these planters add so much colour and Holiday spirit to our front entry, don’t you? I’ve also decorated our door area with a fresh garland and wreath from Costco for a traditional Christmas look.

Materials

• Flower pot with roots and soil
• Bundle of mixed pine, cedar & spruce greens - from the grocery store or your backyard is fine!
• Dogwood branches
• Block of floral foam
• Indoor / outdoor lantern
• Large red bow

Tools

• Scissors or shears

Instructions

1. First, put a block of floral foam on the soil in the center of your pot.
2. Then, place an indoor / outdoor lantern on top of the foam.
3. Next, push stems of pine evenly around the pot into the soil.
4. Next, add a layer of cedar stems.
5. Add the spruce stems.
6. You might now have to trim the stems to get the look you want.
7. Add a few dogwood branches beside the lantern for even more height.
8. Place a bright red bow near the front.
