iOS 17 expectations: This is what Apple is revealing at WWDC
Today starts WWDC 2023, Apple’s own event where new software and hardware are presented. Tonight Apple will unveil another series of new OS updates, including iOS 17. The new iOS version will not come to your iPhone until September, but the new version of the operating system will already be presented tonight. We put together the most important new features for you.
1. Lock screen gets (even) more options
According to Apple, the lock screen of your iPhone will get a few new features in iOS 17. For example, several new fonts are arriving and you get a choice of more wallpapers. This allows you to personalize your lock screen even more than is currently the case.
According to expectations, in iOS 17 it will also be possible to share your personalized lock screen with friends. This way you can easily import a lock screen that you like, without having to recreate it yourself. This is already possible with the dials of the Apple Watch and will soon also be possible with your iPhone.
In addition, the flashlight is adjusted: the strength of the light can be adjusted more precisely in iOS 17. Now you can choose from only four options for the brightness of the flashlight. In iOS 17, this control becomes the same as screen brightness and volume. This way you can adjust the strength of the flashlight much more accurately.
2. Download apps without App Store
One of the main expectations in iOS 17 is downloading apps without App Store. It will then be possible to install applications on your iPhone via Safari (or other browsers). European legislation gave Apple two choices: apps must be able to be downloaded from the internet or more App Stores must be added. Apple probably chooses the first option.

As a result, app developers do not have to hand over a percentage of their revenue to Apple, which they normally have to pay to get their app in the App Store. The new arrangement has both advantages and disadvantages for iPhone users. There are many more apps that you can install in iOS 17, but there are also a number of dangers associated with this large amount of apps.
3. App Library is more organized in iOS 17
Since iOS 14, you can find all apps in the app library. You can see the function on the iPhone and iPad by swiping left a few times on the home screen. The overview will then appear with all the apps on your device. Already a very useful function to see all your apps, but in iOS 17 the library becomes even clearer. You can finally create your own categories.
At this point, Apple determines the different groups in the app library based on the different types of apps you have. Sometimes you therefore have to search in which category the app belongs according to Apple. In iOS 17, Apple puts an end to that search: you then decide for yourself which categories there are and in which category you place an app.
4. New Wallet and Health app in iOS 17
Apple is reportedly revamping a number of apps in iOS 17, including the Wallet and the Health app. In the Wallet app, a new menu bar is added at the bottom of the screen. This menu contains different categories, such as payment cards, keys and ID cards. That way it should be easier to find a pass quickly.
Apple’s Health app is also getting a new design. The app’s data is reportedly much clearer in the new iOS version. Where you now see all health data below each other in the app, in iOS 17 you will find all data in tiles next to each other. This way you can consult much more health data at once.
