School Supplies delivered to Camp Creek Elementary School

Donation of school supplies to Camp Creek Elementary School.

LILBURN, GA October 24, 2016. On Friday, October 21, 16 boxes of school supplies were delivered to Camp Creek Elementary School and accepted by principal, Valerie Robinette.

The delivery was a culmination of a four-week project initiated by Susan Adams. When Adams was talking with a teacher at the Camp Creek Elementary school where she volunteers, Adams realized there were many students without proper school supplies. The teacher said that she often took money out of her own pocket because she wanted every student to succeed. Adams realized that students lacking the proper supplies were distracted from their main focus for being in school: learning.

Adams volunteers as the Hospitality Chair for the Camp Creek Parent Teacher Association (PTA). In addition, she serves in a volunteer position as the president of the women’s organization, the Relief Society, with her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In her positon as president of the Relief Society, she organized the drive for school supplies and people from her congregation donated generously.

The drive yielded 12 boxes packed to the brim with backpacks, lunch boxes, ice blocks, paper, Kleenex, pencils, glue, colored pencils, coloring crayons and many other miscellaneous items a student may need.

The supplies will reside in the counselor’s office and made available to students on an as needed basis.

Principal Robinette said, “We are so incredibly thankful for the partnerships within our community that help us to continue the good work we are doing with educational enhancements in our school. Being able to ensure that all of our students have the supplies they need eliminates a classroom challenge and allows teachers to focus on teaching and students to focus on learning.”

Tanya Zamora, Guidance Counselor, said, “I think this project is a wonderful idea. We have many students that arrive at school that don’t have all the school supplies that they need so this is a great way to help them. Not only that, our teachers often spend out-of-pocket for school supplies that the kids don’t have so this way they can be reimbursed in a sense for the time and money they spend on their own to make sure all the students have the same things.”

Zamora added, “It means a lot to the students to have the same things as others because they don’t feel different or like they don’t have. They are pretty much on the same page so they can learn at the same pace. It is a lot about image and ego. This way they feel just like the other students whose parents were able to supply the school supplies they needed.”

Of the delivery, Cathy Koon, anther Guidance Counselor said, “Thank you! What a wonderful community. I’m very proud to be part of Camp Creek with the community and the churches that support us.”

“As Christians,” Adams stated, “We are about serving where needed in our community as Christ would have us do.”
