Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013)

I met Mr. Harryhausen while I was a student at CalArts. At the end of his animation lecture, a student asked if there was a trick to animating something as complicated as a seven-headed Hydra. Harryhausen simply cocked an eyebrow, gave a wry smile, and replied, "Yeah, you unplug the phone and CONCENTRATE."

Phones were plugged into the walls those days.

And animators were titans.

Farewell, Mr. Harryhausen. You will be greatly missed.

Warm-Up Sketches of Steel

Getting in the mood for Man of Steel. Just over a month up, up, and away!

Above is a rather Reeve-y version of Supes. Below is my take on Zod, Bizarro, and Bruce Wayne. Bruce is the one bottom-center, of course.

Bruce really has it easy, as far as rogues go. There's a reason Penguin doesn't go sailing his umbrella into Metropolis.

Though I would like to see Supes take on some better villains. Maybe Middle-Earth would offer a greater challenge to the Man of Tomorrow!

Especially is Smaug has a Kryptonite-breathing cousin.

Joffrey: "I am the King! Kings do not leap from buildings!"

Stark Soldier 1: "Make way, people!" Step aside!"

Stark Soldier 2: "Come 'ere, Lannisters! We'll have your heads for this!"

Tyrion: "Just aim for those bails of hay! They should be enough to break our fall!"

Joffrey: "Why am I even listening to you? I'm the King, and the King does what he--"

SFX: (SLAP!)

Tyrion: "We Jump."

Tyrion: "Looks like you'll get that roll in the hay after all, nephew!"

SFX: (Squish!)

Joffrey: "This is NOT hay."

Tyrion: "Get in the wheel barrow."

Tyrion: "Happy Nameday Joffrey!"

Joffrey: "I hate you."

Stark Soldiers: "There they are! Up there!"

Tyrion: "I really wish you hadn't kicked that dog."
