What's your businesses sacred cow? In Q3 Stacker's marketplace product hit $5m ARR, and we got their by prioritizing the side that doesn't even pay us. Took longer than I’d hoped, but we've built a really strong playbook that extends to any marketplace. 3 things I've learned about building a b2b marketplace these past 4 years: 1) Figure out which side of your marketplace is the sacred cow A marketplace takes 2 sides to tango, but in reality one side is your sacred cow. For Stacker, (who brokers a relationship between orgs contributing content seeking distribution, and news outlets syndicating content to bolster their site's coverage) publishers are that sacred cow. We realized early on that if we lost brand partners, we could find new ones... but if we lost the trust of publishers, the whole thing would fall down. One of our company values is literally "Publisher First," and we make sure this is ingrained in every decision we make. 2) Figure out which side your marketing is for When people land on your site... who are you talking to? You can't be everything to everyone. For Stacker, we realized that brands (who are our paying customer) were the harder side of the marketplace to continue building, and therefore our website copy is aimed primarily at contributing brands. Pro tip: this can change over time... So make sure you're checking with yourself.... which side of the marketplace needs marketing? 3) Quality over speed At a certain point, you will have "figured it out," and start getting inbound on the supply side. It will be really tempting to open the firehose. Don't. Maintaining quality on the supply side is key, and though it is frustrating to slow your growth... it will be worth it in long run (see #1 - sacred cows). Think this can be applied to so many areas, and its been fun spending 20 minutes thinking of a marketplace, and figuring out what their answer to the above probably is. Here's to the next 100 partners, and the next $10M 🥂

The Carta Total Comp benchmarks lab has had a busy last couple of months. Last month we released CEO benchmarks broken down by Founder vs. Non-Founder, which immediately became our most searched benchmarks. And yesterday we released a new peer group option for our benchmarks: employee headcount. It's not at 100% parity with our valuation-based benchmarks quite yet, but I'm excited to give customers another option to view benchmarks (especially in a world of stale valuations). As always, there's more to come...

The Product Marketing Alliance just issued their 2024 State of #PMM report.... And one REALLY telling survey chart has to do with the PMM TechStack. Dominating the list are core tools (analytics, reporting, CRM, collaboration, market research etc.). These are *great* benchmarks to help younger PMM teams decide where their gaps lie. But what I find interesting is that there are also a number of Demand Generation items on the list (email marketing, video marketing). Shouldn't these be owned by other teams? Excited to announce our brand new signup flow on Web and mobile web, that allows for our customers to enter our product quickly and learn more about our value prop! Congrats Marty Johnson, Sarah Yang, MBA, @Joe Holasek,@scott Mcintyre, Zach Hink, @Marco s, Zahara Mashud, Phil Schept, Danaca Booth (emeritus) for all the hard work that went into this launch! A big part of Product Led Growth's success is in optimizing the sign up flow - this is highly dependent on finding the fine balance between being frictionless and easy while collecting enough info to truly tailor the experience. Our new signup flow efficiently collects key info abt the customer, their industry and their motivations and removes non-essential setup steps to post-signup. We took an experimentation approach and developed a framework that allowed for rapid iteration and measurement, based on risk levels. While A/B testing allows for multiple variants to test out, these can sometimes take a long time to hit statistical significance for something that we consider low risk. Given the lower risk and higher conviction for this feature, we decided to go ahead with a Do-No-Harm metric, that ensured that we weren't harming current metrics and. Over the past few months, we have iterated through the experience, tweaking our funnel and fine tuning our metrics and just shipped the treatment! We are already learning SO MUCH MORE about our customers and they are raving about our simpler experience. Excited to get this out!

HubSpot, Zillow, AmericanExpress and ServiceNow each built billion dollar customer acquisition channels with content, because they all knew one thing. Content ≠ Performance Marketing. Performance marketing has a specific mindset - put a dollar in, get something out. (hopefully its more than a dollar, though for many VC backed startups in the roaring 20’s, they were ok with getting $0.50 😂) Content has a different mindset - nurture potential customers, so they are more likely to buy when they are ready to buy. Said differently: make your performance marketing even more effective. Performance marketing is meant for the 5% of customers that are in market. Content marketing is meant for the 95% of customers who will eventually be in market. But if you don’t start with content now, it will be too late when they are in buy mode (someone else, with a good content strategy, will have beaten you). Great content plays the long game. It builds trust and authority, so that next month, or next year, your performance marketing will actually work. Shout out to a few incredible orgs that have nailed this, and the people that clearly got it.
