Example - how challenging it can be for platforms that manage massive spikes in traffic—like ticketing, social media, and voting apps. When hundreds of thousands of users flood a system at once, it becomes incredibly tough to predict and manage that load. This is made even harder when you’re dealing with “hot keys,” or single records that everyone is trying to access at the same time, like when a specific event or poll option becomes popular. In traditional databases, a single node handles all writes, becoming a bottleneck under heavy demand. Distributed SQL systems like CockroachDB solve this by spreading reads and writes across multiple nodes, preventing overloads and ensuring seamless scaling during high-traffic events like ticket sales or voting. It’s a reminder of how critical it is to have a system that can grow and shrink based on demand, especially for apps that experience unpredictable spikes.
