Glow Dance Birthday Party Details:

This is what Heather shared about the party- “When Georgia told me this would be her “last” party… I was a little sad on the inside. This was her 9th party and I felt like I was good until she turned 12! Since she loves to sing and dance she absolutely wanted a dance party of some sort. We had talked about a Glow Dance Party and when I showed her what blacklight does to a space… she was all in!

Glow Light Tips

Luckily she knew she wanted this theme around October (her birthday is in February) so we loaded up on any clearanced glow necklaces, bracelets and glow sticks when we saw them. We bought a twin bed sheet and some black light reactive paint and the girls and I set out to create a splatter curtain as our party backdrop. It was a lot of fun to create and really lit up the room. A big tip is to purchase a blacklight flashlight, so as you are shopping you can see what will glow and what won’t. It was surprising what did and didn’t react to the blacklight. It saved me from having a ton of returns.

We totally transformed our basement. I used Duck Tape on our area rug to create a dance floor. The tape stayed on the whole night and didn’t damage the rug. I also used a lot of washi tape on our cabinet doors, bar countertop and entertainment center. It was inexpensive and added pops of color throughout the space.

Glow Decor Basics

I had two favorite elements of this party: 1. The glow stick chandeliers. I thought my hands would fall off after I cracked them all but it was so worth it! They lasted for several hours and a little snip at the top allowed them to hang on our existing light shades. 2. The yarn art. I used the clear removable hooks by 3M to wrap the yarn around. We used neon poster board cut out with a 3″ circle cutter. Georgia placed them over the hooks to conceal them and we both agreed they added a little something extra to the space. Ben Baeb Photo did a brilliant job of capturing these two elements!

It was important to her to let her guests “get their glow on” by piling on the glow items so we built out a GRAB AND GLOW area complete with a mirror so the girls could see what they looked like. I even included garage sale stickers that were a hit with the girls who put them on their faces, arms and hands.

Georgia and I made all of the paper fans and she helped me put washi tape around the PARTY letter dishes we used. I added some neon paint to white milk glass vases and we ordered gorgeous paper flowers. Our plates, cups and cutlery all glowed and added color in a fun way. The sign with her name on it was made using two poster boards and pipe cleaners (be careful of the glue you use… I wanted to use hot glue but it glowed. So, I used plain white Elmers glue because you couldn’t see it). I hung it by punching a hole in each corner and using green floral wire.

Get Your Dance On

Each guest selected a pair of socks that would glow while they were dancing. Guests were asked to RSVP with their favorite song so we could build out our playlist. We had a microphone and some girls chose to sing along during their song while the others danced.

We had glow ring toss, glow bowling (using Bai bottles, a glow stick and a little washi tape on the lids) and we played freeze dance. Our party prizes varied but most guests wanted our coveted “disco balls” hung throughout the space. They collapse/expand and hanging them around the room better defined our spaces.

Sugar and Stripes knocked it out of the park with their custom headphone fondant cupcake toppers! Georgia painted a canvas and added washi tape and plain white bags became more interesting with neon tissue paper and some washi tape.

Georgia had many favorite things that just happened to glow in the blacklight so we brought them downstairs and showcased them in a small bookcase. It varied from LOLs to Shopkins and Twozies. It was a sweet reminder to me that she won’t always play with things like that.

The girls had a blast. I had a blast. And we truly danced and sang the night away. And so, even though she says it’s her “last” party… I’m holding out for a few more!”

This isn’t a Kara’s Party Ideas party, so your best bet is to reach out directly to the party stylist. Her name and link is in the first paragraph of the party post. XOXO!
