This is a good read, but I personally enjoyed Nasreen's books on Gulzar, Waheeda Rahman and Guru Dutt more than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mildly interesting dialogue on the Hindi film song
Reviewed in India on December 20, 2017
For many of us, the Hindi film song is a defining element of our cultural milieu. Both in its most coarse and shallow forms, and in its moments of pristine beauty, it reflects our inner and outer lives as individuals and as a civilisation. This book is a long conversation, about 50 pages, between Javed Akhtar and Nasreen Munni Kabir, on the lyrics of the Hindi film song - what goes into writing it, the word as sound and the word as meaning, the relationship of the words with the music, the words as a reflection of society, the evolution of the song over the last many decades, and so on. The rest of the book consists of 200 pages of Akhtar's lyrics, both in the original language, transliterated, and a translation of them in English.

The conversation is mildly interesting, going beyond an ordinary conversation on songs in its discursive extent, but does not reach deep insights, either of a poetic or of an analytic kind. The ambiance of some of the beautiful songs discussed here - those of Javed Akhtar, Gulzar, Kaifi Azmi, Shailendra - does not quite come alive. The book would perhaps appeal to those with a special interest in Javed Akhtar's thought, and in understanding the creative processes that contributed to the work of one of the most moving and profound song-writers and poets of our time.
