Oree's Fine Southern Cuisine

 Oree's Fine Southern Cuisine

Our COVID-19 food truck journey around the Fresno area heads south to Kings County where we visit Lemoore-based Oree's Fine Southern Cuisine. Oree's can be found at various food truck venues in Kings County and occasionally in Fresno, too. We found Oree's in Hanford.

We ordered a low country seafood boil (crab, shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes), shrimp gumbo ya-ya (gumbo with vegetables, sausage, chicken, shrimp, and rice), and peach cobbler. Gumbo ya-ya's name is said to come from women who would cook the gumbo all day long while talking, or "ya-ya-ing."

Our two entrees and the cobbler came to $47.95 including tax.

Sno Cafe

Sno Cafe

On a hot day with restaurants mostly limited to take out due to COVID-19, we decided to cool off at the Sno Cafe truck. The Sno Cafe specializes in southern style gourmet shaved ice. The menu features basic single flavor shaved ice,  signature shaved ice, stuffed shaved ice, and specials. They can be found with other food trucks in the Fresno area on Instagram.

We ordered a chocolate toffee truffle from the specials menu and a Georgia sunset from the signature menu. We ordered small, enough for us, but they also have a medium and a large size.

Chicken King

Chicken King

Chicken King is a soul food restaurant in downtown Fresno. Chicken King is located at 1234 Fulton Street which until recently was the Fulton Mall. Chicken King is open Monday through Saturday. 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
We ordered the smoked chicken with sides of spicy collard greens and yams, and the southern fried fish and prawns combo with cole slaw and fries. We also ordered a fried chicken thigh to try their signature fried chicken.
Chicken King is not fast food. The food is all cooked to order so it will take a little time to prepare. Though the restaurant looks like a fast food take out, the food is home cooking.

Rudy Jr.'s Chicken Man (CLOSED)

Rudy Jr.'s Chicken Man (CLOSED)

Rudy Jr.'s Chicken Man is a Fresno classic. Rudy Jr. is no longer with us, but his restaurant lives on and is more than 50 years old. Located in west Fresno at 2707 North Hughes Avenue at the corner of Clinton, the building is dated but the inside is still welcoming. This is not a fast food restaurant. The chicken is pan fried, and you should expect to wait for your meal to be individually prepared.

We ordered one combination chicken and ribs dinner and one French dip sandwich. We also ordered a side of onion rings. The dinner came with garlic toast, fries, and two sides. We chose macaroni salad and beans. We selected onion rings to go with the sandwich.

Seafood - Crackin' Claw

Crackin' Claw

Crackin' Claw is a West Coast version of a New Orleans Crab Boil. Crackin' Claw is open for dinner every day and for lunch on weekends. The West Coast part is the addition of Snow Crab and Dungeness Crab on the menu as well as Filipino fried spring rolls ("lumpias") and Filipino deserts. The seafood is steamed in your choice of seasonings, such as Cajun. Also on the menu are New Orleans Classics: Po Boy Sandwiches, Gumbo, and Jambalaya.

Crackin' Claw is located in a strip center at the southwest corner of First and Nees avenues in Fresno, next to Smart & Final.

Boiled Menu
We ordered the Dixie mix with the regular seasonings. You can choose any level of heat you want. The Dixie mix was enough for two people. It came with Snow Crab, Shrimp, Mussels, Crawfish, Hot Links, Corn, and Potato.
Dixie Mix served in a Wok
Mussels, Shrimp, and Crawfish under the Snow Crab Legs
Crawfish - You eat the tail like a little lobster tail.
New Orleans Style Shrimp with the head still on. You pull the head off and peel and eat. Some people suck the  fat out of the head.
Steamed Mussel - Tender and delicious (sometimes the tender little mussel falls out and you need to scoop these from the bottom of the boil bowl).
Louisiana Hot Link
Boiled Corn on the Cob
Boiled Potato
The food was good as expected. The sauce at the bottom was good for dipping - both the seafood and chunks of the boiled potato. This is not a place to bring someone who does not like shellfish. We were stuffed when we finished, and the total came to $30.30 for two of us (before tip).
Dessert Menu
If you are still hungry they do have Filipino desserts,

Signed Dungeness Crab Shells on the wall
Mardi Gras Masks
Eating seafood in the shell can be messy. They will pup a large bib on you if you want. When you are done, they have two large sinks in the back to wash your hands.
