Central Bank Says Nigerians Are Free To Use Bitcoin

                                     

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said there was no time the bank banned the activities of Cryptocurrencies in the country. The Governor of the bank, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this in Abuja at the 30th seminar for Finance Correspondents and Business Editors organised by the bank.

Emefiele, who was represented by Adamu Lamtek, Deputy Governor, Corporates Services, said what the bank did was to protect the banking sector from the activities of Cryptocurrencies and not a ban on its activities.

Shoprite Confirms Exit From Nigeria

                                     

Shoprite Group has announced its unaudited results for the 26 weeks to 27 December 2020 in which sale of merchandise increased by 4.7% to R83.4 billion while its trading profit increased by 18.3% to R4.7 billion. The Group confirms that the terms of sale have been concluded for the disposal of a 100% equity stake in its Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Ltd subsidiary. The transaction has been lodged with the Nigerian Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for approval.

Nigeria To Disconnect Niger & Benin Republic Electricity Over ₦2.60 Billion Debt

                                                 

 Nigeria may be forced to cut off power supply to the Republics of Niger and Benin over an outstanding N2.60 billion electricity debt. Details of the unpaid electricity debt owed by the two countries are contained in the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) second quarter 2020 report released yesterday in Abuja.

Elon Musk Buys $1.5 Billion In Bitcoin, Plans To Accept It As Payment

                                      

Elon Musk's car production firm, Tesla has bought about $1.5bn (£1.1bn) of cryptocurrency Bitcoin, causing the price of Bitcoin to jump 17% to $44,220, a record high.

Tesla also announced that the company will start accepting bitcoin as payment for it's products in the nearby future as the company was trying to maximise returns on cash that is not being used in day-to-day running of the company.

CBN Directs Banks To Shut Down Cryptocurrency Account

Today, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) circular sent to commercial banks and other financial institutions surfaced online. Cryptocurrencies have gained popularity since bitcoin, the most valuable crypto, rose significantly four years ago. The coin went from $900 in January 2017 to almost $20,000 by the end of that year. While cryptocurrencies are known for people making (or losing) money from trading, they have many use cases, including making cross-border payments, remittances or storing wealth (protected from inflation or exchange rate depreciation).

Micro-blogging Platform Parler CEO John Matze Has Been Sacked

                               

 The head of Parler, a social mediaplatform that was forced offline for allowing inflammatory posts about the Capitol Hill insurrection, was fired by the company's board, raising question as to when the right-wing social media platform will be up and running again. In a Wednesday post on LinkedIn, John Matze acknowledged he had been terminated and linked to a story that quoted from a memo he had sent to employees.

An independent panel of experts, headed by former Irish president Mary Robinson, has cleared the beleaguered leader of the African Bank of Development (AfDB) of corruption, according to a report obtained by AFP. Akinwumi Adesina, 60, a charismatic speaker known for his elegant suits and bow ties, became the first Nigerian to helm the AfDB in 2015.
