🌟 New

  • We’ve launched new search operators that work on all platforms so you can find the exact post you’re looking for.
  • You can now mute the unread count from a joined community via the meatballs menu at the top-right of the community.
  • Community admins can now allow moderators to invite new members too. Check out your community’s settings!
  • The ability to search for communities on web is rolled out to everyone. There’s a new dropdown option on search that lets you browse communities related to your search term on the web (this will be in the apps with the next update), and there’s a new “Related Communities” section in the sidebar on the web.
  • We’re recommending communities for folks who have already joined communities in more places, including a new carousel in For You.
  • Backdating posts has always had the potential to act in unexpected ways, so we’ve added new warnings about this.

🛠 Fixed

  • Ads in the iOS app no longer interrupt your background audio. Please update to version 36.4 for the fix.
  • When leaving a longer reply on desktop web in certain cases or mobile web on Android devices, the cursor will no longer jump up unexpectedly in the text area.

🚧 Ongoing

  • No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.

tumblr update

New: Search operators for better searching!

We hear you, and we share your frustrations: it’s hard to find a specific post. You know it has a particular tag or phrase, and it was posted on this date, or at least, within a specific year. But you can’t find it!

So, today, we’re excited to announce that you can use ✨ advanced search operators ✨ in the search bar now! You can now say potato from:staff year:2021 to easily enjoy that video of a potato being microwaved again.

Before we jump into the details, a couple of caveats to note:

  1. These search operators are only available in the main Tumblr search bar. They don’t work in the search bar in individual blogs.
  2. The search operators only work on posts created in 2017 or later.

OK! Let’s go explore these operators!

Exact phrase match

When you surround your query with regular double quotes (not curly quotes), it will match posts with that exact phrase in the post’s text content, or that exact phrase as a tag.

For example, “chappell roan is roan of arc” matches posts with that exact phrase in the content, and also matches posts that have the exact tag #chappell roan is roan of arc.

image

Match operator

By default, the query matches the post on either the text or the tags.

You can use match:text to specify you want to search the post content, or match:tags to search the post tags. For example:

  • sword world match:text looks for posts with the words “sword” and “world” in the post content.
  • sword world match:tags looks for posts with the words “sword” and “world” in the post tags.
image

From operator

Use from:blog or from:@blog to find only posts by a particular blog.

For example, halloween from:staff finds all posts by @staff that has the word “halloween” in the post content or tags.

image

Year operator

Use year:YYYY to find posts from a particular year.

For example, halloween year:2019 finds all posts from 2019 that has the word “halloween” in the post content or tags.

image

Date operator

Use date:YYYY-MM-DD to find posts from a particular date.

For example, halloween date:2019-10-08 finds all posts created on October 8, 2019 that has the word “halloween” in the post content or tags.

image

All together

You can combine all the tools above to form even more specific queries:

screenshot of a tumblr search page, with the following query entered in the search bar: "first of halloween" match:text from:staff year:2019ALT

Congrats! You’re now a Tumblr search wizard! 🪄

Other syntax

As a reminder, you can already search by a tag, or by multiple tags:

  • Prefixing your query with # performs a tag search — that is, it will find posts with that exact tag. For example, #star wars will only return posts with the #star wars tag.
  • You can search for multiple tags at at time. For example, #star wars #art will find posts that are tagged with both the tag #star wars and the tag #art.

You can combine this with the new operators to find what you are looking for!

A guide on how to use the new operators has also been added to our Search and Filtering Basics Guide.

Tumblr Patio support

The enhanced syntax makes Tumblr Patio even more powerful. You can now open multiple search columns each with different fine-tuned queries that use the syntax above to get you customized feeds.

tumblr update features tumblr tumblr search tumblr how to tumblr tips

Tuesday, September 17th, 2024

🌟 New

  • The character limit has been raised from 500 characters to 1,975 characters for all replies on web! No more having to string multiple replies together to say what you want. Thank you to everyone who tested this first in communities!
  • We started enabling some of those long-anticipated community discovery features for a subset of users! Anyone currently in a community, plus a small and random percentage of all users, will see a new dropdown option on search that lets you browse communities related to your search term. We will also show a sidebar of “Related Communities” on the web for some folks. Communities that are free-to-join will be ranked higher, so if you are the admin of your community and want to get your community in front of more eyes, consider changing your join setting from “invite-only” to “free to join.” We also leverage the tags (in addition to title and description) that you’ve set for your community to rank results, so update those if you haven’t yet!
  • When you engage with your first community, new signposts will guide you through the experience.

🛠 Fixed

  • When purchasing items in TumblrMart, important elements will no longer be missing or obscured.

🚧 Ongoing

  • No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.

🌱 Upcoming

  • Over the next little while, we’ll slowly increase that percentage of random users until all users are able to find communities via search.

tumblr update

Thursday, September 12th, 2024

🌟 New

  • When a community post gets 10 reactions (not counting reactions from the post author) the post author will now receive a notification about those reactions. We want to give some kind of notification when you’re getting reactions, but not for every single reaction (that could be a deluge of hundreds of notifications in our big communities). Let us know what you think!
  • Community admins and mods will now be asked for a reason when they moderate a comment.
  • Logged out users, likely new visitors to Tumblr itself, can now start requesting new communities to be put on the waitlist. They will be asked to log in or sign up before finishing.
  • To celebrate the new folks joining Tumblr from Brazil, we have launched a lot of communities features if you’re in that country, such asrecommended communities in the For You feed and related communities carousels when searching and viewing tag pages in the mobile apps.

🛠 Fixed

  • Dismissed “Check out these blogs” recommendations are now dismissed forever.
  • New custom domains were not receiving renewed SSL certificates, and thus not properly accessible. This has now been fixed, and new SSL certificates have been granted to the affected domains.
  • Archives and custom pages on blogs with custom domains were broken. This has now been fixed.
  • On web, some dialogs did not disable our keyboard shortcuts while they were open. For example, you could like a post with the ‘l’ key even though a dialog was open on top of the post! This is now fixed.
  • On web, we were displaying an option to block a community in Activity, which is not actually possible, and has now been removed. Instead of blocking a community, you can simply leave a community.
  • The community tags section has been updated to make it clearer that they will aid in discovery of your community.
  • We’ve made a few small design improvements throughout communities. Less wasted space FTW!

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re aware that some ads may interrupt background audio on iOS and are working on a fix! We have also received reports of a weird “cricket-like” sound in the app, which we think is related.

🌱 Upcoming

  • No upcoming launches to announce today.

🛠 Fixed

  • On web, screenreaders will now read badges in blog headers and post headers as “(number) badges”, instead of announcing each badge individually.

🚧 Ongoing

  • No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.

🌟 New

🛠 Fixed

  • Previously, on Web, when you looked in the notes view of a post in your queue or drafts, it would say that you can’t reply to or reblog the post. This is true — because the post is not live yet! — but the previous explanation was unclear. We’ve made it clearer now.
  • You’ll now a see a preview of the image you uploaded or picked when setting a community avatar.
  • Blog archives were briefly loading as if the blog didn’t exist. This has now been fixed.

tumblr update

🌟 New

  • Posting in communities no longer counts towards your overall 250 posts/day limit (500 for those with Tumblr Premium), instead we’ve made posting in communities a new, separate 250 posts/day limit (also 500 for those with Tumblr Premium).
  • We’ve launched an option to make communities free to join and added a “Copy link” option to the community menu to make opening the floodgates even easier.
  • If you’re banned from a community, you’ll now see “You’ve been banned” instead of “There’s nothing here.”
  • In a community post’s meatballs menu, “Delete” has been replaced with “Moderate post,” where you can now select reasons for why you’re removing the post and add an optional note. At this moment, the removal reasons you provide won’t be visible to anyone yet. In the future, the person who posted the removed post into the community will see the removal reason as well as any included note.
  • On public communities, all users can now access the list of admins and moderators.

🛠 Fixed

  • For a short time Friday and Saturday last week, posts that were moderated in communities were still surfacing in the feed. We’ve fixed the issue, and moderated posts are now filtered out of the feed again.
  • We fixed a bug that was preventing communities from being deleted when the last member left, and we’ve cleaned up any communities that had no members. The names they were using are freed up for new communities.
  • We’ve made sure that community notifications are displayed properly, and with the proper icon, across all platforms.
  • We found an issue that briefly prevented Tumblr Premium users from fully creating communities. This has been fixed, and all affected communities have been fully created.
  • We fixed an issue that briefly removed the ability to backdate posts late last week.

🚧 Ongoing

  • No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.

🌱 Upcoming

  • No upcoming launches to announce today.

🌟 New

  • Tumblr URLs in Replies will now become clickable links!
  • Speaking of Replies, they’re threaded now!
  • Did you just get promoted to moderator in your Community, but don’t know what to do? Behold the new documentation!
  • Community admins can now ban members! Banned members will not be able to re-join or even see the Community they were banned from.
  • We’re opening up the Communities API to third-party developers via the public Tumblr API. Stay tuned in our public docs repo for updates on the different endpoints!

🛠 Fixed

  • It was difficult to read long alt text on the web, and this has now been fixed! Please keep in mind that alt text should be a brief description of your image, as if you were describing it to someone over the phone, solely to make your post accessible to folks using a screen reader.
  • On the web, it was previously impossible in many cases to add a Read More block to the top of a post, and now you can!

🚧 Ongoing

  • Folks with the Android app are unable to block anonymous Asks, but they can still be blocked on the web, and there will be a fix in the next update.

🌱 Upcoming

Threaded Replies are here!

Ever find it difficult to figure out what someone is replying to? Same! Now, when you reply to someone’s reply, it’ll create a nice indented thread.

  • Reply to a thread by clicking the reply icon at the bottom of a comment or tapping the meatball menu on a reply, then hitting “Reply.”
  • Collapse a thread of comments with “Hide replies” or load more with “Show more replies.”
  • Threads are only one level deep—replies to a thread will show at the end of that thread.
  • You’ll be notified when someone replies to you.

This should help keep conversations in replies more organized, meaning you don’t have to scroll back to find the beginning of an exchange: It’s in a thread!

tumblr update

Tuesday, August 6th, 2024

🌟 New

  • We are rolling out the ability to reply to replies and create one-level-deep threads on all posts! Check out the Help Center for more info. We’ll also be posting about this again when the rollout is complete!
  • In the meatball menu of recommended blogs in the apps, we’ve renamed “Whoosh this away” to “Not interested in this blog”. We’ve also greatly increased the time this will hide that blog from you before we could potentially surface it again.
  • Folks who have not yet verified their account’s email address will no longer be able to post or reblog into communities — please verify your email!
  • When someone is promoted to moderator inside a community, they’ll now be notified by push notification, an activity item, and have a new onboarding flow introducing them to moderation features. Similarly, when a moderator is demoted, they’ll be notified.
  • In the latest version of the iOS app, you can now see what specific version of the app you’re using by going to Profile > Settings and scrolling to the bottom.

🛠️ Fixed

  • Folks in the Philippines should be able to access Tumblr again!
  • The latest version of the Android app includes a fix for a crash that could happen when changing the app’s color palette.
  • The latest version of the Android app also fixes a bug that could cause the app to crash when purchasing Tumblr Premium.
