Paul Weller - Paul Weller Has Got Soul, Volume 2: The 1970's and 80's

I just posted Volume One of this two volume series. For most of the info on it, please refer to my notes there. In short, British rocker Paul Weller is a huge soul music fan, and I thought it would be fun to compile all the soul covers he's done in his long career. There were so many (as I write this in 2023) that I had to make two big albums.

I think my tastes in soul music are very similar to Weller's. It's my opinion that the soul music was devastated by the rise of disco in the late 1970s, and it's never been as good since then. Weller must have a similar idea, because even though this is billed as covers of the songs from the 1970s and 1980s, everything is from the 1970s except for the last two songs.

As with Volume One, the songs are ordered by when the original versions were released, not by when Weller did his versions.

It's quite possible that I've missed some cover versions here and there. If you see any that I've missed, please let me know.

Here's the list of the original artists for each song:

01 Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
02 War - Temptations / Edwin Starr
03 Give Me Just a Little More Time - Chairmen of the Board
04 Hanging On to a Memory - Chairmen of the Board
05 What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
06 Family Affair - Sly & The Family Stone
07 Will It Go Round in Circles - Billy Preston
08 I Wanna Be Where You Are - Michael Jackson
09 If I Could Only Be Sure - Nolan Porter
10 Work to Do - Isley Brothers
11 Hercules - Aaron Neville
12 Stoned Out of My Mind - Chi-Lites
13 The Bottle - Gil Scott-Heron
14 Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City - Bobby 'Blue' Bland
15 Wishing on a Star - Rose Royce;
16 One Nation Under a Groove - Funkadelic
17 Thinking of You - Sister Sledge
18 The Razor's Edge - Defunkt
19 Promised Land - Joe Smooth

And here's the usual song list:

Just like Volume One, I had some fun making the album cover heavily based on soul music concert poster art. Here is the exact poster I based this one on.

Paul Weller - Paul Weller Has Got Soul, Volume 1: The 1950's and 60's

Here's something a little different I felt like making. I saw someone on YouTube made a compilation of soul covers by Paul Weller. I thought that was cool, but I also knew that he'd covered way more than a dozen such songs. Even though he's mainly a rock and roll guy, he's been massively influenced by soul music. Heck, his first band the Jam did soul covers in concert even before they got a record contract.

He's done so many covers, in fact, that I had to split this into two very big album. This one deals with his covers of songs that were first done in the 1950s and 1960s. The second one deals with his 1970s and 1980s covers. Rather than order these by the years he recorded them, I thought it would be more interesting to order them by the years the original versions of the songs were first released. One can get a better appreciation over the type of soul music he's liked the most. For instance, this volume only has three songs from the 1950s. But there's a big number of songs from around 1965.

This repeats a lot of stuff I've posted on other stray track albums and such. Look to the mp3 tags for the details. (Note that I put the year the song first came out in the year field, instead of the year Weller released his version.)

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Don't Go to Strangers - Orioles
02 Fever - Little Willie John
03 Slow Down - Larry Williams
04 Stand by Me - Ben E. King
05 [Love Is like A] Heat Wave - Martha Reeves & the Vandellas
06 My Girl - Temptations
07 Every Little Bit Hurts - Brenda Holloway
08 How Sweet It Is [To Be Loved by You] - Marvin Gaye
09 I Got You [I Feel Good] - James Brown
10 [I'm A] Roadrunner - Jr. Walker & the All Stars
11 Back in My Arms Again - Supremes
12 I Take What I Want - Sam & Dave
13 Meeting [Over] Up Yonder - Impressions
14 Going to a Go Go - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
15 In the Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett
16 I Don't Need No Doctor - Ray Charles
17 Things Get Better - Eddie Floyd
18 Sweet Soul Music - Arthur Conley
19 I Heard It through the Grapevine - Gladys Knight & the Pips
20 I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James
21 Big Bird - Eddie Floyd
22 Abraham, Martin and John - Dion
23 Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkins Singers
24 I've Never Found a Girl [Who Loves Me like You Do] - Eddie Floyd
25 What Does It Take [To Win Your Love] - Jr. Walker & the All Stars
26 My Whole World Is Falling Down - William Bell

And here's the usual song list:

01 Don't Go to Strangers (Paul Weller)
02 Fever (Jam)
03 Slow Down (Jam)
04 Stand by Me (Jam)
05 [Love Is like A] Heat Wave (Jam)
06 My Girl (Jam)
07 Every Little Bit Hurts (Jam)
08 How Sweet It Is [To Be Loved by You] (Paul Weller)
09 I Got You [I Feel Good] (Jam)
10 [I'm A] Roadrunner (Paul Weller)
11 Back in My Arms Again (Jam)
12 I Take What I Want (Paul Weller)
13 Meeting [Over] Up Yonder (Style Council)
14 Going to a Go Go (Paul Weller)
15 In the Midnight Hour (Jam)
16 I Don't Need No Doctor (Paul Weller)
17 Things Get Better (Paul Weller)
18 Sweet Soul Music (Jam)
19 I Heard It through the Grapevine (Amy Winehouse & Paul Weller)
20 I'd Rather Go Blind (Paul Weller)
21 Big Bird (Jam)
22 Abraham, Martin and John [Acoustic Demo] (Paul Weller)
23 Oh Happy Day (Paul Weller)
24 I've Never Found a Girl [Who Loves Me like You Do] (Paul Weller)
25 What Does It Take [To Win Your Love] (Paul Weller)
26 My Whole World Is Falling Down (Paul Weller)

This album is an hour and 17 minutes long.

This is just a fun listen. But he's covered so many soul classics over the years that the two volumes put together are practically a history of the golden era of soul music.

Since this is a tribute to Weller's love of soul music, I thought it would be fitting to base the cover art on the style of soul music concert posters from the era featured here. In case you're curious, here's the exact poster that I based it on.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: Wembley Arena, London, Britain, 12-3-1982

Here's the seventh and last volume of the Jam playing for the BBC. I believe this is the seventh the last concert the band ever did. As such, it's an extra long concert the ably sums up their six year career.

The sound quality is generally excellent, as you'd expect for a BBC recording. However, there were issues in some places for a few of the songs. In two cases, it was a volume issue with bassist Bruce Foxton's vocal microphone being too low in the mix. So I used the X-Minus audio editing program to boost the vocals for those spots. In one more instance, the band let the audience sing a bit, and the audience was too low, so I made the same kind of fix. Those three songs have "[Edit]" in their names.

Otherwise, there's not much to say. If you want to get just one of these Jam BBC concerts, I suggest this one. They went out with a bang while still in their prime.

This concert is an hour and 42 minutes long.

With the Jam done, in the near future I'll turn to Paul Weller's successor band, the Style Council, and what they played for the BBC.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: Hammersmith Palais, London, Britain, 12-14-1981

Here's another album of the Jam performing for the BBC. It's a live concert this time.

Actually, it's kind of two concerts. I had a 1981 concert all ready to go from a while back. Earlier today, when I was getting ready to post this, I went to look up some more info on it, and I stumbled on the fact that there two concerts the Jam did for the BBC in 1981, both in December. In fact, they were only done five days apart. The one I had ready to go was only 38 minutes long, but I found a different one that's an hour and five minutes long. The longer one has all the songs of the short one, and then some. So I'm posting the long one.

The Jam didn't release a studio album in 1981. But they had released one in late 1980, "Sound Affects," after the last concert they did for the BBC in 1979. So this concert naturally has a lot of songs from that album, plus two hit singles from 1981 ("Absolute Beginners" and "Funeral Pyre") and one of their B-sides ("Tales from the Riverbank"). But also, the band's next (and last) album, "The Gift," would be released in early 1982, and they played a few songs from that as well. One of those was the classic "Town Called Malice," which would hit Number One in the British charts. This apparently was only the third time that song was played in public, according to setlist.fm.

As mentioned above, this album is an hour and five minutes long. It was officially released as part of the "Fire and Skill" live box set.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 5: 1981-1982

This is the fifth album of the Jam playing for the BBC. It's also the second and last album of studio sessions.

Unfortunately, by this time, the Jam had become very successful, and I've noticed that the more successful a musical act tends to get, the less likely they are to do BBC studio sessions. So I felt obliged to look for different TV or radio shows to fill in the missing gaps, especially since there are no BBC studio sessions at all from the band's last year together, 1982.

The first two songs come from a British TV show called "Get Set for Summer." Those are unreleased. The next four are from an actual BBC studio session, and have been included on the official album "At the BBC."

All the remaining songs, except for the last one, are from a Danish TV show called "Spil Op." The Jam hardly played live for any TV or radio shows in 1982, arguably their most commercially successful year, but for some odd reason they did do this one TV appearance in Denmark. There was a studio audience, but I very carefully removed as much crowd noise as I could, so these songs would fit with the other studio versions on this album. For some songs, I used the X-Minus audio editing program to remove some of the cheering over the music.

I was all set to post this album when I realized I hadn't included a version of "Beat Surrender." That was a Number One hit in Britain and one of the band's best songs, so I didn't want to leave that out. Luckily, it turns out they played it live on a British TV show once. So that unreleased version ends this album.

Although this is all of the band's studio sessions, they did do two more BBC concerts before breaking up, one in 1981 and the other in 1982. So expect those soon.

This album is 55 minutes long.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: Rainbow Theatre, London, Britain, 12-4-1979

The Jam played a concert for the BBC almost every year they were in existence. So, another year, another concert.

In November 1979, one month before this concert, the Jam released the album "Setting Sons." It's a classic five-star album in my opinion, and naturally the band played a lot of songs from it.

There's not much else to say. The sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the BBC. This was officially released as part of "The Jam at the BBC," as a limited edition bonus disc.

This album is 59 minutes long.

The cover photo, just of lead singer Paul Weller, is from this very venue in the same month of 1979. However, the band played there four times that month, so I don't know if it's from this exact show.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: Paris Theatre, London, Britain, 6-1-1978

Here's Volume 3 of the Jam at the BBC.

This time, they did another concert. But it was a short one, as they had to share an hour-long slot with another artist. It took a few months before the release of their third album "All Mod Cons," but they already played a couple of songs that would appear on that: "Billy Hunt" and "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street." Most of the rest were songs from their second album, "This Is the Modern World."

There's not much else to say. The sound quality is very good, probably better than the previous BBC concert they did.

This album is 30 minutes long.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: 100 Club, London, Britain, 9-11-1977

Here is the second album of the Jam at the BBC. The first one came from BBC studio sessions, but this one is an entire (though relatively short) concert.

When this concert came out in 1977, punk rock was all the rage. The Jam had lots of rocking energy, like punk, but it's interesting to see them doing covers of no less than six songs from the 1950s or 60s: "So Sad about Us" by the Who, "(Love Is like A) Heat Wave" by the Motown band Martha and the Vandellas, "Back in My Arms Again" by the Supremes, "Slow Down," by Larry Williams, "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley, and "In the Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett. Clearly, they were different than typical punk bands, with deeper musical roots.

This concert was released on a live box set called "Fire and Skill." But I thought the vocals were a bit low, so I boosted them using the X-Minus audio editing program.

Note that it appears the band was short on songs to play, so they played "in the City" twice, the second time as the encore.

This concert is 55 minutes long.

The Jam - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1977-1979

I think it's possible that of all the musical acts I've posted about here, none has played more for the BBC than Paul Weller. It's high time I start posting some of his stuff. I was hesitant to do so because a lot of it has been officially released. But I realized that there's a lot that is still unreleased.

This album is a case in point. It contains just studio BBC sessions from Weller's first band, the Jam. Twelve of the 15 performances here have been officially released on an album called "At the BBC." But three have not. Those three, tracks ten through twelve, were recorded for the BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1978. I suppose that's why they were overlooked. But they really should have been included, especially since they were performed without an audience.

Anyway, Weller has done so much for the BBC that I'm not going to post it all. Heck, I'm sure there's lots that I don't even know exist. But I'll still post a lot from his the with the Jam, the Style Council, and his long solo career. I plan on posting all of the Jam material, because it's all very good.

This album is 40 minutes long.

The Jam - Band Demos, Volume 2: 1979-1982

I just posted a collection of band demos by the Jam covering the years 1977 and 1978. This is the continuation of that, covering the years 1979 to 1982, which was the end of the band. Please read my post for the earlier album to get a more detailed explanation. But the short version is that these are all full band demos, different performances that the final studio versions.

There's not much else to say that I didn't say last time, except that I think this is a stronger album, due to band leader Paul Weller's songwriting steadily improving.

As with the other band demos album, all of the performances here have been officially released. They come from five different sources, with most of them being from deluxe and super deluxe versions of their studio albums.

01 That's Entertainment (Jam)
02 See-Saw (Jam)

The Jam - Band Demos, Volume 1: 1977-1978

It's been a good while I've posted anything by Paul Weller. So here's the first of two albums I'm posting today from his old band, the Jam.

I've already posted three albums of stray tracks by the Jam, as well as one album of acoustic demos. This is the first of two albums of band demos. Every single take here is with the full band, but is different from the final studio version. Admittedly, most of these takes aren't that different from the final versions, but it's great sound quality and it's a good excuse to hear more from this fantastic band.

The great sound quality is due to the fact that every single song here is officially released. But all of the versions are from deluxe versions of albums, or from the Jam's box set. In my opinion, it makes much more sense to gather them together like this, sorted chronologically, then scattering them over different releases.

The Jam - Acoustic Demos, 1978-1982

Fans of the Jam have been lucky in that the group has been very well covered with archival releases. Most of the albums have been re-released in deluxe or even super deluxe versions with tons of bonus tracks, and an excellent and comprehensive box set has been released too.

Out of all those bonus tracks, many of them are demo versions of some sort. I went through all the bonus tracks I could find and categorized the demos as band demos or acoustic demos. I sorted them and found there was one album worth of acoustic demos and two albums worth of band demos. This is the acoustic album.

The Jam were a very rocking band that sometimes even got lumped into the punk rock movement. That said, they had an acoustic side almost from the very beginning, and that's what this is all about. Most of these tracks are of Paul Weller alone on the acoustic guitar. But some songs, such as the first one, have a light touch from one or both of the other two band members.

It's highly unlikely the Jam will ever reunite, and if it does, even more unlikely they'd play acoustically. So this is the closest we'll ever get to the Jam "unplugged."

I'll post the two  albums later if there's vocal interest. I'm not sure if I should since the songs aren't done that differently from the final released versions.

By the way, the songs below are sorted chronologically.

01 Worlds Apart [Demo] (Jam)
02 Along the Grove [Demo] (Jam)
03 Burning Sky [Demo] (Jam)
04 The Eton Rifles [Demo] (Jam)
05 Hey Mister [Demo] (Jam)
06 Saturday's Kids [Demo] (Jam)
07 Thick as Thieves [Demo] (Jam)
08 Little Boy Soldiers [Demo] (Jam)
09 Wasteland [Demo] (Jam)

The cover art shows Paul Weller up close playing acoustic guitar with bassist Bruce Foxton in the background. I added the text. I'm not sure where the picture is from.

The Jam - Beat Surrender - Non-Album Tracks (1982)

Here's the last of three albums gathering up all of the Jam's stray band tracks. It covers just 1982, and reflects Paul Weller's growing interest in soul music, with about half of the tracks cover versions of famous soul songs.

I say "band tracks," because I also have albums I plan on posting eventually of the Jam doing band demos of songs on their other albums, as well as acoustic demos.

As I mentioned previously, the Jam has been thoroughly covered with a box set and deluxe or super deluxe versions of all their albums. Even so, this album has a nice unreleased rarity, a cover of "I Think You Got Your Fools Mixed Up" by Brenton Wood.

By the way, my general rule is to not include songs that are on other albums. "Precious" is on the Jam's 1982 album "The Gift." But the version of that song included here is two minutes longer, and in my opinion is much better.

01 Precious [12 Inch Version] (Jam)
02 The Bitterest Pill [I Ever Had to Swallow] (Jam)
03 The Great Depression (Jam)
04 I Got You [I Feel Good] (Jam)
05 Pity Poor Alfie - Fever (Jam)
06 A Solid Bond in Your Heart (Jam)
07 War (Jam)
08 Move On Up (Jam)
09 Stoned Out of My Mind (Jam)
10 Shopping (Jam)
11 I Think You Got Your Fools Mixed Up [Demo] (Jam)
12 Beat Surrender (Jam)

The album cover is just the cover to the "Beat Surrender" single, except I wiped out the names of the B-sides.

The Jam - Going Underground - Non-Album Tracks (1980-1981)

As I mentioned in my previous post of a Jam album, I was able to gather up all of the Jam's stray tracks and make three albums from them. This is the second one, covering 1980 and 1981.

Like the last Jam album I made, this is high quality stuff, with some of the greatest songs of all time on it, such as "Going Underground."

Archival releases of Jam material has been very thorough. Not only was there a five disc box set that included just about everything they did, but there have been deluxe or even super deluxe versions of all their albums. Despite that, I've included two songs in excellent sound quality that still remain unreleased, both covers: "My Mind's Eye," and "Give Me Just a Little More Time".

The Jam released studio albums in 1980 and 1982, but not 1981. Most of the songs here are from 1981, so you can basically think of this as their 1981 album that should have been. A lot of the songs here turn out to be covers (tracks 3, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, and 19).

This album is 53 minutes long.

01 Going Underground (Jam)
02 The Dreams of Children (Jam)
03 Rain (Jam)
04 Liza Radley (Jam)
05 My Mind's Eye (Jam)
06 And Your Bird Can Sing (Jam)
07 Stand by Me (Jam)
08 Funeral Pyre (Jam)
09 Disguises (Jam)
10 Absolute Beginners (Jam)
11 Tales from the Riverbank (Jam)
12 Get Yourself Together (Jam)
13 Big Bird (Jam)
14 Pop Art Poem (Jam)
15 Every Little Bit Hurts (Jam)
16 Walking in Heaven's Sunshine (Jam)
17 Sweet Soul Music (Jam)
18 Give Me Just a Little More Time (Jam)
19 Waterloo Sunset [Demo] (Jam)

The cover is based on the cover of the "Going Underground" single. Most versions of that cover art were of a bad picture, in my opinion, but luckily I found a rare version that looks much better. I hardly changed a thing for this one, except to increase the contrast to make it more black instead of a bland dark grey.

The Jam - News of the World - Non-Album Tracks (1977-1979)

I find it inexplicable how little the Jam is known and appreciated in the U.S. (where I live). In just six years, they had 18 top 40 singles in Britain (including four number ones), and would have had more except their record company only issued 18 singles. Yet not one of their songs ever made the top 100 in the US.

The Jam are great, just like Paul Weller, the band's main singer and songwriter. Not only did they put out a bunch of classic albums, but pretty much all their stray tracks were at the same high level, including many of those top 40 hits. They have so much non-album material that I was able to make three albums of that stuff. And that doesn't include demos and live performances, which will be deal with separately.

"So Sad about Us" and "My Girl" are cover versions.

Here's the first one. It covers 1977 to 1979, and makes up a nice 43 minute album, which was the exact sort of length as their albums at the time.

UPDATE: On October 29, 2022, I updated the mp3 download file with one song I'd missed, a cover of the Temptations classic "My Girl." It's officially unreleased, but the sound quality is still pretty good.

01 All Around the World (Jam)
02 Carnaby Street (Jam)
03 My Girl (Jam)
04 News of the World (Jam)
05 Aunties and Uncles [Impulsive Youths] (Jam)
06 Innocent Man (Jam)
07 So Sad about Us (Jam)
08 The Night (Jam)
09 Strange Town (Jam)
10 The Butterfly Collector (Jam)
11 When You're Young (Jam)
12 See-Saw (Jam)
13 Best of Both Worlds (Jam)
14 Simon (Jam)
15 Smithers-Jones [Single Version] (Jam)
