In the nearly 30 years that I've been driving, Bay Motor Works provided the best service experience I've had...and they didn't even work on my car. Let me explain...I had just had my service completed at a nearby, highly rated auto service business who I had been going to for the last few years. Unfortunately, the main person I dealt with was no longer there and some of my dealings with the current people left me feeling like it might be time to look around for a new place to have my car serviced.
The previous business had diagnosed my car with a faulty starter and said it would cost $1400 for them to replace it. I decided to look around and got a lower quote from Bay Motor Works at $1250. I took my car in and spoke with Cliff who knew that I was already committed to having it fixed there. Instead, he looked up my car, saw that there was a recall that potentially could cause the issue I was having and strongly suggested I take care of that first and then come back if the problem remained. Well, lo and behold, it did fix the issue and that saved me $1250 and cost him the same.
I have to say, it's incredibly refreshing to deal with an honest business that saw I could potentially fix my issue for free and basically threw away over a thousand dollars that they 100% knew I was already committed to.
Thanks again, and I will definitely be having my car serviced here going forward!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Daniil A.North Beach, San Francisco, CA034Apr 21, 2024

First time going here, and they're 2 blocks away. Simple oil change, so was in and out quickly. I don't know if they take drive-ins -- I had made an appointment thru Yelp. I have been using the dealer for maintenence for years but they're too expensive and hard to get in, so it's Bay Motor Works from now on. Curious to know what all this shop can do.

After reading all the reviews and a ridiculous experience at San Francisco BMW Service Center (see my other review there) decided to take my car to Cliff to get fixed. Another friend also recommended this shop to me since they thought his work was great, pricing fair, and he was very honest.
It was a pretty major repair to fix the Air Conditioning since it was leaking near the evaporator but his quote seemed fair and fit it in sooner than expected. I just left my car there so they could start on it as soon as they were ready so got it back a week later.
I needed a copy of a key made and now I'm also working on scheduling an appointment with the guy he recommended. Appreciate all his help and will be back again.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - David M.San Francisco, CA0195Sep 27, 2023
I am so grateful to Cliff and everyone at Bay Motor Works. My mechanic closed up shop last year, and I've been stressed trying to find a mechanic in SF who I could trust to do quality work. Enter Cliff and Bay Motor Works. Cliff is extremely HONEST, and that alone is something that has earned my loyalty and continued business! It is something that cannot be understated; knowing that you have a mechanic who respects his paying customers and is always honest and upfront about what your car needs (and doesn't need) is worth its weight in gold. Equally important, Cliff and his staff are great at what they do! I needed something out of the ordinary involving the installation of a windshield cowl, and Cliff went above and beyond to make sure it was done perfectly, and it was. They do quality work and I would trust them with any repairs or work on my car.
If you own a BMW or a Mini, I cannot recommend Cliff and Bay Motor Works highly enough. They will take care of your car and keep it running in tip top shape! I would not take mine to anyone else.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eric N.San Francisco, CA12316Mar 9, 2024
I've taken my car to Bay Motor Works to see Cliff for 10 years. He and his shop have been extremely trustworthy, knowledgeable and honest, and I won't take my car anywhere else for service!

Cliff is the only guy I try to work on my precious little MINI. The other day it was idling so rough I couldn't move it one car length. I was concerned that I would have to tow it to Bay Motor Works; and shell out $150 - $175 for the tow.
Fortunately, it fired up fine the next morning and I was able to drive it to his shop. It turned out the throttle body failed and the fix would be costly. I know that Cliff offered a good price for parts & labor and he is still the best deal in town.
Great news, the MINI was fixed within a day and I am back tearing up the roads. Just kidding. I drive like an old man.
Cliff earns every single star of my five star rating.Helpful 5Thanks 1Love this 6Oh no 0Jun 14, 2021Previous reviewThe "Service Engine Soon" light came on recently and I knew I shouldn't wait too long to have my precious MINI checked out. What does that dreaded light mean? False alarm? Red alert? Who knows.
My concern was the cost. As it turned out the issue was serious. The oxygen sensors finally gave up the ghost. Thank goodness for Cliff & Bay Motor Works. I know it would have cost an arm & a leg at the dealer.
The MINI is running well and I'm back to driving it Italian Job-style.Mar 2, 2021Previous reviewCliff to the rescue again. The brakes needed work for a little while, but I wanted to wait until The Surge subsided a bit before taking my beloved MINI in. I called Cliff hoping to get in on Saturday and he said, no problem.
They replaced the pads, rotors and did a brake flush, too. He also recommended I do an oil change since it has been a while. I agreed and now my little go kart is driving like a dream.
Cliff does great work and an affordable price. He's the go-to guy for my MINI.Mar 7, 2018Previous reviewWhen it rains, it pours. My alternator started to go on me as I was driving home late Saturday night. Luckily, it limped onto my street and I managed to park it--crookedly--in front of my house. Bad news: I would need to have it towed to Bay Bridge Motors on Monday morning. As my AAA membership only offers the first 5 miles for free, I was on the hook for the additional 8 miles or so. I had no intention on leaving my beloved MINI in he hands of a less capable mechanic. So, I called Cliff right when they opened and informed him I believed my alternator died. He said, "Sure bring it in."
After a 30-minute ride in the tow truck, we arrived at BMW (just realized the acronym, nice.) and Cliff, another mechanic and I pushed my MINI into the shop. I told him I'd get some breakfast and to give me a call with the details. It turned out I needed an alternator and a battery--not cheap, but necessary. After returning to the shop he said it would take a while and offered to play a movie on the monitor, since he knew I had nowhere to go. It made the wait far more enjoyable. He had a nice, comfy couch and I watched the entire movie.
What I like, is that Cliff showed me what the problem was with my MINI and what they fixed. He even remarked that I had a good battery as it was the same one that came with the car back in '06. He topped off my fluids and told me to keep eye on the expansion tank that they replaced back in October. If needed it topped off again, he said stop by anytime. Nice.
All in all, the repairs were not cheap for a guy on a budget, but I rest assurred knowing that quality work was being done AND at a fair price. I intend to keep my MINI for as long as I can and will continue to take it Bay Motor Works.Feb 21, 2018Previous reviewLast Saturday was my third appointment at Bay Motor Works for my 11-year-old MINI. This time the brake pad indicator light in the speedometer turned on. I knew that it would not be a cheap fix, but hoped it would not break my tiny wallet. Cliff has been very helpful in letting me know what needs to be fixed and what could wait.
I arrived right when they opened at 9:00 am on Saturday to give them the ample time. Fortunately, there was a great breakfast place up the street where I could kill some time and meet up with a buddy. Cliff called about an hour later and informed me that both the pads and rotors needed to be replaced. He offered two options: regular and high performance. The great news was that both were under my estimates and I chose the high-performance (cross-drilled) rotors. Oh yeah. He said he'd call back when they were finished.
By 2:00 Cliff called back said I could pick up my car anytime before five. Once again, they did a good job on my car and it was under my estimates, which was awesome. Bay Motor Works is my go-to shop for my precious--and old--MINI.Dec 22, 2016Previous reviewMy '06 MINI Cooper S began to run/idle very rough (very loud, loss of power) on the weekend. I wasn't sure what the problems was, but I knew it was serious.
I spoke to Cliff on the following Monday morning and scheduled an appointment the following Saturday. He informed me that he would need to charge me at at least one hour labor and would call me when he diagnosed the problem. With time to kill, I met up with a buddy and had breakfast in the neigborhood. Cliff called back and advised me that I had a crack in my flex pipe and would need to get it welded. He gave me that name/address of a muffler down the street. After it was welded, I would need to return to his shop to re-diagnose. At this point, I began to think the worst and calculated how much it would cost to replace the manifold/flex pipe/catalytic converter. Cliff said that the weld should fix the issue, but if it doesn't we would review my options. As it turned out, the weld fixed the issue. After bringin g back to him, he clear the fault code and I was on my way. Plus, he only charged me for a half hour of labor.
Cliff is good guy and I now have a new repair shop that I will be taking my MINI to. I really appreciated his honest and professionalism. MINI owners know to not take their car to any repair shop and that is is hard to find a good tech. Cliff is definitely one of them. He's got my business. - Alan F.San Francisco, CA02736Mar 16, 2022
Awesome work here and very trustworthy. Reputation precedes them. Clifford was responsive and extremely helpful. I had my maintenance done here on an M3 but really the major issue I had was a problem with not being able to pass smog due to a failure. He was able to pinpoint the problem extremely quickly and without incurring cumulative diagnostic costs.

Highly recommend this shop for work on older BMWs. Decided to try here since my sister recommended it and it's close to home. I had a battery drain issue which can be tough to diagnose and was so excited they were able to fix it. Car is running great and they charged a reasonable price. I don't feel like they overcharged me at all which I'm thankful for. Clifford and his team were really friendly too and explained the issues and work done. Very honest and great service. Thank you!
