[T]ravellers . . .will welcome a synthesis so balanced, intelligent and well informed, and will find Amanda Claridge a fine companion on their archaeological walks in Rome."--Times Literary Supplement

"Claridge's book will appeal to a range of readers--from armchair archaelogists to serious visitors and students of Rome's archaeology.... Recommended."--CHOICE

This book is an encyclopedia of (perhaps) every known building from the Roman Republic and Empire in which some evidence of the building remains today. The book is incredibly comprehensive - I can't fathom how one person could accrue, organize and publish so much architectural knowledge. The book is written without prejudice, and makes clear when identifying features of an archeological site are conjecture. The author also presents competing interpretations of archeological finds, when both remain viable

As an architect, this book is all that I want when looking to understand the extant architectural ruins from 600 yrs of Roman building.

I've relied heavily on the prior edition of this guide over the last 10 years to guide me around, over and under the most beautiful city in the world and it's quickly become one of the most cherished books in my possession. This new edition is fully updated and reveals the most recent discoveries and sites which have been discovered/reopened. It even gives a detailed walk through of the House of Livia, which wasn't even opened to the public until months after the book was printed. This book is worth it's weight in gold to anyone trying to decipher and understand the mysteries and riddles of the eternal city. Cannot recommend enough

I love this book, especially while I am studying a classical civilization subject. It is a list of all the classical sites you can see in Rome. Amanda Claridge not only has ancient maps regarding their ancient location, but goes through each sites and lists its history. At the back of the book is also a list of museums and their websites, opening and closing times, and ticket prices. A list of churchs and other free locations to visit are listed as well. This book has made my experience in Rome a lot better, allowing me not only to view Rome in its present modern state, but also to see it as it once was.

A frustration I've had when visiting Rome - and especially the forums/fora and Palatine - is: what did it look like two thousand years ago? The Roman Forum and Via Sacra are pretty much just paved pathways with column pedestals on either side. Why bother? This book, more than most, really explains what I am seeing - or not seeing. Building histories, floorplans, overlays showing different construction in different eras in the same spot, drawings of what the buildings looked like, etc. The book is dense and has good drawings. For a guidebook, it definitely is on the geeky end of the spectrum for those that need to know how something works or what something looked like. Probably best read as background material before a trip. It is pretty hefty and dense, so it is not something you would want to carry with you while doing a walking tour, though I have done it and not regretted it.

This guide has been a go-to for scholars for many years. The online edition is just great. It is so easy to move around the text and there are links to take you to all of the figures. My only complaint (very minor) is once you click on the figure link, you do not see the figure. You must page back to actually see the figures. The best travel guide around for anyone who wishes to get the most out of their trip.

For those who cannot sate themselves on the Archeology of the ancient city, this book is fairly exhaustive. The book extensively covers the familiar sites in cogent and loving detail, but also includes those which are more obscure and generally unknown. What I found interesting, was that Claridge also discusses the early Christian churches in the mix, and her discussions of them went a long way in somewhat dispelling my preconceived notion that those buildings are mute evidence of the Pagan city being devoured by the new religion, which clad itself with bits and pieces of it's ruins, much like a hermit crab.

I've used this reference almost annually for my trips to Rome. Best suited to someone who wants to go beyond the tourist basics, it has provided good, solid, and well organized information for countless smaller sites throughout the city and its environs. It's a big book, but even though I own the Kindle version, I generally prefer taking the hard copy along. Could benefit from more diagrams and maps, but I realize it would make the book more unwieldy.

I just came back from Rome where I used it to find sites that I missed in previous visits. I don't know of any other book that gives you the detailed history of a specific site, like this book. I have made several trips to Rome and wish I had this book in my previous trips. If you want a better understanding of the historical sites of Rome this is the book. The book not only gives you the history of major sites, but then goes into detail about individual elements of the site. Excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely changes how you see the city of Rome
Reviewed in Brazil on December 11, 2022
This book is outstanding! I thoroughly recommend this for any history buff that will visit the Eternal City and is particularly interest in the Roman period. Amanda Claridge will guide you through countless sights and neighborhoods of Rome, providing a very extensive historical perspective, such as building techniques and materials (and their sources), political, religious and social context as well as any changes in these throughout time, as it was frequent for buildings that stood ~2000 years in use.

The book is expertly organized around different regions in Rome, zooming into the different buildings (some not easily seen, if at all) of each area. Each section has an overview map with labels, many pictures, illustrations, and drawings to better explain how the building looked like, how was decorated and how it fitted with the environment around it. Texts vary in depth and length, but all strike a very nice balance between detail and brevity. This makes the book extremely readable and a nice companion to bring along when visiting such sites.

Having recently being to Rome, I cannot recommend this book enough: it massively improved my trip experience. Knowing details of how the buildings functioned, in what context and how that change gives you an enormously different perspective. The possibility of checking the text during the visit makes all the more enjoyable. If possible, I would recommend you read and highlight the most interesting parts, specially of the sights you intend to see. Not only you will help you prioritize in a city that has far too much to be seen even in a month, but you will arrive already armed with some knowledge and will help you to refresh your knowledge faster during the visit. The chapters on the areas in and around the Forum (Capitoline Hill, Palatine Hill), Campus Martius, Caelian and Viminal were the highlights, but the entire book is a joy to read and extremely useful for any tourist that wants to go deep into the historical Rome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to The antiquities of Rome
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2013
I bought this book in advance of a week in Rome (not my first visit to the city) and found it invaluable. This is a detailed guide purely focused on Roman era monuments and so should not be viewed as a general guide to the city. For anyone with a more specialist interest in the monuments wishing to find out more and to see them in a new light it is however excellent. It covers not only the more obvious sites such as the Forum and Colosseum but also many lesser known remains. Above all I found it fascinating to discover roman buildings and elements which had been reused in later buildings such as medieval or baroque churches. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to have more than a superficial understanding of what they are eyeing when visiting Rome.
