Purchase options and add-ons

Featuring vibrant full color throughout, the seventh edition of Bart D. Ehrman's highly successful introduction approaches the New Testament from a consistently historical and comparative perspective, emphasizing the rich diversity of the earliest Christian literature. Distinctive to this study is its unique focus on the historical, literary, and religious milieux of the Greco Roman world, including early Judaism. As part of its historical orientation, the book also discusses other Christian writings that were roughly contemporary with the New Testament, such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Apocalypse of Peter, and the letters of Ignatius.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The depth of the scholarship and the exhaustive content in The New Testament is impressive. The exploration of the New Testament documents from a historical and exegetical perspective is invaluable. Ehrman's writing style is engaging, conversationalist, and easy to follow. I can imagine him in a conversation with his students as he wrote the book."--William Rodriguez, Bethune Cookman University

"Excellent. The book's main strengths are its impeccable scholarship and clarity of explanation. It's the only textbook I use in any course."--Corrie Norman, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"The New Testament draws from a rich consultation with numerous resources, aptly distributed, so that Ehrman gives a nod to all parties, policies, and nuances. His prose style is substantive and accessible and his treatment of theological platforms is respectfully acknowledged. The book's advantage is its appeal to 21st-century students."--Doris Plantus, Oakland University

This classic textbook provides a lot of contexts on the origins of the New Testament. It puts all the books of the New Testament into context, it discusses the authorship of them, and it does all of that mostly by the methods of exegesis. For me, this book was really helpful to understand the NT because I look at all things through their historical context. For Christians who are looking only at the Christian message this book might not be interesting.

I am sure there are many people who will be disappointed in this study of the New Testament. I read his 5th edition and was delighted with his interpretation of events, possibly because I was raised a Roman Catholic who was told not to read the Bible because I wouldn’t understand it correctly. Of course I read it. It is so enlightening to entertain other points of view of these approximately 1800 year old writings that have had such a major influence on middle eastern and western culture for centuries.

The New Testament by Bart Ehrman is a textbook for college students and is written for that group so it's fairly easy reading and Ehrman, in writing for those students, is a delightful teacher. The text is full of facts, illustrations, sidebars and other features to bring his reading alive and interesting.

This is a great book! I have the paperback version, but it's unwieldy trying to read it in bed. I was excited to see a Kindle version of this excellent version...until I tried to read it. Half the text on many pages is missing, the chapters are broken up into different sections that make no sense. They may be Kindle's attempt to split up the boxes in the book, but they're unreadable. Hyperlinks don't work. Book is completely unreadable.

This book is what you need to know. Ehrman is a top scholar of the NT. The only reservation I will mention is that he is an agnostic/atheist about the claims of traditional Christianity about Jesus. He admits his interpretation of Jesus is his own (although many NT scholars would agree with him). Ehrman writes as an historian--which means he can neither affirm nor deny any supernatural activity. As a firm Christian myself, I found his interpretation enlightening, yet ultimately not convincing. The mystery of the Incarnation was not refuted nor damaged by this book. Had the book been written prior to the Resurrection, it would have made a stronger case.

Completely unreadable because of the formatting. One line per page, in apparently random order. I have tried it on Android, iOS and PC (and yes tried restarting each device and re-downloading).
