Michiana Unsolved: The Disappearance of Kimberly Coleman

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Imagine having a loved one go missing. Now imagine more than 30 years have passed and there are still no answers.

In Monday’s Michiana Unsolved, Christine Karsten tells us more about the disappearance of Kimberly Coleman.

Kimberly Coleman, 22, of South Bend was reported missing on April 9, 1992. She was living in the LaSalle Park area at the time.

While it was April of 1992 when she was reported missing, family last talked to her six months prior on the southeast side of South Bend.

“It was pretty consistent that Kimberly would call family maybe once a month or so, so after a few months of not hearing from her, it began to really raise concerns and that’s why she was reported missing in April,” explains Lt. Kayla Miller with Michiana Crime Stoppers.

The South Bend Police Department began to investigate and learned she was last seen on the southside of South Bend a few months after that in the S. Michigan Street area.

“At the time of Kimberly’s disappearance, she was about 5′6″ and about 132 pounds and described to have brown eyes and dark brown or black hair. Fast forward now, she would be about 53 years old,” Lt. Miller says.

Foul play is suspected in this case because at one point during the investigation, some family members believed Kimberly traveled to Chicago with a male. It was unknown if it was at will or not. She also has some ties to the Fort Wayne area.

“Somebody may know something about Kimberly or know where she is at, or Kimberly herself may see this; we don’t know,” Miller says. “What we know is that Kimberly had several children, and those children don’t know their mother.”

“It has to be agonizing every day and that struggle of, do you move forward as if they are no longer on this Earth because then you feel like you are giving up on them, or do you maintain hope and that she is still out there, and every day is agonizing to move through?” adds Lt. Miller. “My heart goes out to her family, her children, her family, and friends. I want them to know that we haven’t forgotten about Kimberly, and we are still here doing what we can.”
