Nickel
We are one of the world's largest and most carbon-efficient producers of this important metal.
Nickel is rarely used in its pure form and is instead combined with other metals such as iron, chromium and copper. It is used to make alloys such as cast iron, steel (including austenitic stainless steels) and non-ferrous alloys. It is also used in nickel-based alloys, which have more demanding applications.
The electric vehicle industry is currently increasing the demand for low-carbon and high purity nickel products, essential for long-range batteries.
Used in:
Batteries for electric vehicles, bathroom taps and shower heads, coins, mobile phones, jet engines, cutlery.

Cobalt
This is a transition metal, resistant to high temperatures and important for the production of metallic superalloys. It is essential for industry, hospitals and the energy sector.
Used in:
Manufacture of tools, medical equipment and batteries.
Used in:
Cobalt is present in vitamin B-12 as cyanocobalamin, which helps prevent anemia.
It is also part of the composition of some pigments and dyes. Cobalt has been detected in Egyptian objects dating back to 3,000 BC.

Where we are
Our base metals operations are located in Brazil, in the state of Pará, where we have copper and nickel operations; in Canada, where we have extensive infrastructure to produce, refine and distribute nickel, copper and cobalt; and in Indonesia, where PT Vale produces nickel.
We are also present in Japan, at Matsusaka Refinery, which processes nickel, cobalt and inorganic industry chemical products; and in the United Kingdom, where we refine the nickel oxide produced by our mines in Indonesia and Canada.
