Game notes: There was a fair amount of good and a fair amount of bad that could be taken from Casey Mize's last outing.

Let's start with the good.

Casey Mize has struggled to create whiffs, and in turn, struggled to rack up strikeouts for pretty much the entire season. Entering his last start against the Philadelphia Phillies, Mize's season high for strikeouts was just six, and on six different occasions this year he's had two strikeouts or less. Both Mize's whiff rate and strikeout rate are in the bottom 20th percentile, according to Baseball Savant, as the former No. 1 overall pitcher just hasn't made batters miss a lot in his return from multiple surgeries that kept him out for most of the last two seasons.

However, when Mize faced the Phillies Monday, he finished the day with 10 strikeouts and created 19 whiffs, far and away his season highs. Earlier this month, Mize created just one strike swinging against the Milwaukee Brewers and three strikes swinging against the Washington Nationals. Over his last two outings, he has had 30 whiffs combined. Talk about an improvement.

The bad news is hitters still are finding a way to create damage against Mize. He gave up three earned runs and nine hits and lasted just 4⅓ innings against the Phillies last time out. With an already taxed bullpen, the Tigers need more from Mize.

Now, Mize will try and keep the swings-and-misses coming Sunday afternoon against the Angels but will hope to turn those whiffs into a quality start and get through six innings for just the second time this month.

After the Sunday showdown with Los Angeles, the Tigers will have an off day Monday before heading to Minnesota to continue their 10-game road trip on Tuesday.
