There are currently no security restrictions in effect at UNOG. Please monitor local media to be aware of local events and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Download the United Nations Electronic Travel Advisory (eTA), a mobile application freely available both for iOS and Android phones. The application will enable you to: 

  • Receive all the security information needed to stay safe, including contact information of security staff, local travel advisory, and security notifications related to your location.
  • Find all the UN premises in your current location.

Remain reachable by security professionals during emergency situations and when in need for help. Additionally, National safety alerts and Swiss security advisories can be obtained by downloading “Alert Swiss”, a mobile app by the Federal Office for Civil Protection, to help you plan for and stay safe in an emergency while in the country. Prohibited items

Please be aware that the following items are prohibited inside the Palais des Nations: 

  • Any instrument made, intended for, or capable of use as a weapon, including:
    • Firearms or any part thereof (real or replicas); compressed air guns, gun lighters, BB or pellet guns, starter or flare pistols, spear guns; stun guns, tasers or similar devices capable of delivering an electric shock
    • Sharp objects such as axes, hatchets, ice picks, scissors with pointed tips longer than one inch, meat cleavers, machetes; knives (with blades longer than four inches); razor-types blades (including but not limited to box cutters, utility knives, cigar cutters, razor blades)
    • Tools, crowbars, etc.
    • Ammunition/munitions
    • Explosive/incendiary devices or replicas of incendiaries; fireworks
    • Corrosive or toxic substances
    • Mace/pepper spray
    • Large monopods (selfie sticks) or tripods and other professional journalistic equipment by non-media accredited personnel
    • Sport or club-like items such as baseball or cricket bats, golf clubs, hockey or lacrosse sticks, pool cues, ski poles, bows and arrows; swords, sabers; billy-clubs, night sticks, brass knuckles, throwing stars and other martial arts weapons
  • Radiological, biological and chemical agents
  • Devices capable of emitting disruptive noise, odours or cause visual impairment
  • Flammable liquids and fuels, gasoline, aerosols, turpentine, paint and thinner, gas torches, lighters or matches; lighter fluid, non-personal care aerosols
  • Compressed gas cylinders
  • Drones (unmanned aerial vehicles)
  • Items designated as illegal by the host country for which there are laws restricting or prohibiting their use or possession
  • Items whose significance could be opposed to the interests of the United Nations (e.g. unauthorized written material, offensive banners, clothing, flags intended to be political and used for demonstration)
  • Non-prescription narcotics
  • Alcohol
  • Skateboards, scooters, Segways and other similar recreational terms (these items can be carried under certain circumstances, but riding is not allowed within the premises)
  • Bottled water and other liquids as mandated by local law enforcement and transportation security authorities or as required during heightened security levels
