The finalists of the IDEAward 2023 in a short introduction:
Springs and damping play a much larger role in today's world than it might seem at first glance: The most obvious and well-known applications of such spring-damper systems can be found in vehicles. However, they play an important role not only in these, but also in robotics, building , production, medical and measurement technology, train transportation, hyperloops and much more. The problem with the hydraulic and pneumatic spring-damper systems used is that they merely convert energy into heat instead of reusing it. They also offer limited comfort and are relatively sluggish in their response.
Our magnetic spring-damper system offers an innovative solution for wear-free, energy-efficient and highly functional suspension. Based on the principle of magnetism, it allows active adjustment of system behavior while meeting functional safety requirements. Our system maximizes energy efficiency by recovering kinetic energy.
Scentum utilizes quantum-based olfaction for molecule detection in both natural and industrial contexts. Our technology, inspired by the sensitive olfactory organs of living beings, enables the detection and interpretation of odor molecules even in minimal concentrations. In doing so, we provide a groundbreaking alternative to conventional technologies such as electronic noses, which rely on high molecule concentrations and lack the necessary specificity to perform reliable measurements.
Our technology has a wide range of applications, including early disease diagnosis, the identification of hazardous substances, and the discovery of active compounds. With Scentum, we harness the power of quantum technology and biology to perceive the scents invisible to the human nose.
The demand for spicy foods is growing across the world as chili pepper production is struggling with climate change. At the same time, there's a rising need for natural, non-steroidal solutions to address growing health issues such as arthritis, chronic pain, and obesity. Concurrently, as governments try to curb antibiotic resistance with regulations, livestock owners struggle to promote healthy animals without antibacterial drug additives. What do all these challenges have in common? There is one biomolecule that holds the potential to address these challenges and more, from pain relief creams to natural antibacterials in animal feed supplements—that biomolecule, found in hot peppers, is capsaicin.
Currently, capsaicin is either extracted in limited quantities from large volumes of peppers or chemically synthesized using harmful solvents, restricting its broader applications due to the negative environmental impact of the synthetic process. Kapsobi disrupts these conventional approaches. We're utilizing precision fermentation technology to scale up capsaicin production, offering an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative. Our mission is to supply manufacturers with readily available, safe, and eco-conscious spices they need to make more sustainable and safer products. We at Kapsobi are committed to extensive research and innovation to transform the spice industry, making a variety of biomolecules available for a healthier planet.
G-SIM is an innovative technology prepared to transform both academic and industrial research. The central mission of G-SIM is to provide an ethical and sustainable alternative to expensive and ethically complex animal experiments. It aims to operate as a virtual laboratory, utilizing advanced AI and ML models to simulate biological experiments and predict their outcomes, resulting in significant time and resource savings.
Researchers can utilize this system to model and study gene editing, disease mechanisms, drug testing, and conduct in-silico animal experiments within a virtual environment, before performing real-world testing. By leveraging the wealth of multi-omics data, we are currently developing an in-silico mouse model.
In essence, G-SIM offers a smarter, more efficient, and compassionate approach to research, reducing the reliance on animal testing and providing invaluable guidance to researchers at every step of their scientific journey. In addition, our software solution will feature an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it accessible even to biologists with no prior experience in computer science, AI, or ML. This ensures that researchers from diverse backgrounds can harness the benefits of G-SIM in their work.
The world is suffocating in plastic. Nonetheless, plastic has become so important in many areas that we cannot completely avoid it. To solve this problem, Yngvik has developed a novel plastic polymer called CAL. CAL is a home compostable and degradable bioplastic made using food waste. It naturally disintegrates in both water and soil. Our two products, a thin film and an adhesive, are therefore a perfect fit for single use packaging in the non-food packaging industry. With that we are accelerating responsible consumption and production (SDG #12) and tackle serious environmental problems like the pollution of oceans and land (SDGs #14 and #15).
AIRGAE pioneers sustainable and circular solutions for the aquaculture sector. Humanity today employs more than 8000 active satellites for services like GPS, Banking, and Climate Change monitoring, which more than 7 billion people rely on. On the other hand, space debris, fragments from old satellites and rocket bodies, stay in space for years. Traveling at over 20000 Km/h (meaning 15 times the speed of a bullet), they can completely destroy a functional satellite once they collide. With collisions increasing every year and the debris population growing exponentially, we need a solution.
At AcTLAbS, we aim to provide the world's leading detection accuracy by developing space-based systems; and software boosted by cutting-edge Machine Learning algorithms. This way, we will be able to predict and avoid satellite collisions to save safety-critical space infrastructure for humans and enable space exploration for generations to come.
