Learn More About Server Management Software
What is Server Management Software?
Server management software configures, monitors, and maintains physical and virtual servers with the goal of optimizing their performance. This helps ensure that applications, websites, networks, and databases are performing at their expected service levels. It identifies server issues by monitoring server CPU, RAM, disk usage, and storage resources, and it supports server fault troubleshooting.
In addition to monitoring performance, server management products oversee server firmware, operating systems, and software to ensure they are up to date. They also administer firewalls, antivirus software, and access controls to secure servers. The software helps manage power and thermal controls.
Many vendors offer server management across a variety of server platforms, including Windows, Linux, Unix, VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, and Xen. However, some products are dedicated to a single platform such as Linux.
Server management software is used to manage web servers, application servers, databases, file servers, and email servers. It is used by sysadmins, developers, and hosting providers. Many of its features overlap with and are included in IT infrastructure monitoring tools, system monitoring software, observability tools, and remote monitoring and management software.

Server Management Software Comparison
Consider the following when purchasing server management software.
Environment: Some vendors offer cloud-based versions of their software, while other products are intended for bare-metal servers. Cloud-based licenses for virtual environments can readily handle volatile requirements, while bare metal licenses are more suitable for a dedicated server environment.
Scope: Some vendors offer a broad range of server management tools within their software suites, while other vendors offer individual modules for specific server-related management functions. These functions include dedicated patch management, Windows Syslog management, and internet server management. If you don’t need all the features of a comprehensive platform, you might save money by using a modular vendor.
Platforms: Many vendors support several platforms such as Windows, Linux, and VMWare. Other vendors only support a single platform. Make sure you choose a server management solution that supports the major platforms your servers will run on.
MSP: If you don’t have sufficient internal IT resources, a managed service provider could be a better choice than an in-house solution. Managed service providers offer robust remote server monitoring and management tools, but usually cost more than onsite solutions.
Pricing Information
Pricing depends on the number of servers supported. A single node starts at $21 a month and prices can reach into five figures when managing thousands of servers. There are some free open-source options, and free trials are common. Many vendors only offer pricing via quote.
