Emergency medical evacuation may include transportation to the nearest suitable medical facility for the traveler’s needs by ambulance or by air (if necessary), as well as coordination with the treating facility, provision of a trained medical escort if one is needed, assistance with flight and immigration clearances, ground transportation on both ends of the evacuation if it is performed by air and all further assistance necessary to ensure that the traveler’s evacuation needs are met. Additionally, some policies may provide for transportation of a family member or traveling companion to accompany the injured or ill party.
Air evacuation will be provided either by an air evacuation service, and/or via commercial airliner, depending on the severity of the injury or illness.
After initial treatment, the coverage provides for return of the covered traveler to his or her residence, a medical facility close to said residence or another location in the United States at the traveler’s request. It may also provide for the return of the traveler’s dependent children to accompany the covered traveler.
In no case does emergency evacuation coverage provide for the costs of medical treatment. It is only applicable to the costs of the actual evacuation.
Some plans provide evacuation coverage under other circumstances where the traveler’s life may be in danger, including natural disasters, military coups and political or civil unrest.

Repatriation of Remains Coverage
In the event of the death of a covered traveler, repatriation coverage means that travel insurance provides for the return of the deceased traveler’s remains to his or her home or to a nearby facility for funeral or cremation services, up to the coverage limits set forth in the policy.
The travel insurance company will make all necessary arrangements for such transport, including expenses associated with embalming, a container appropriate for shipping the remains and shipping costs. Shipping is provided via the most economical and direct route.
In no case does this coverage provide for expenses related to the cremation, burial or funeral of the covered party, nor does it cover associated expenses such as an urn or coffin.
