Did Ted Lasso end with season three? That's what everyone guessed, but the door was always open for a fourth season of Ted Lasso; and now, there may be one in the works.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Television has picked up options for three core cast members Hannah Waddingham (who plays Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (who plays Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) to return, with new deals reportedly in the works for other main stars. Deadline adds, "Getting the cast back paves the way toward a Season 4 greenlight, contingent on budget approval and scheduling as actors whose options have lapsed may have joined other series that have them in first position, sources said. While the outreach to the cast is underway, early preparations are also being made to open a writers room. If all elements come together, we hear production on a fourth season is eyeing an early 2025 start."

At the U.S. Open 2024, Jason Sudeikis gave an update on the status of Ted Lasso season four, saying, "I don't know—I heard many people tell me there is [a season four], because it was announced on a website, and I'm so excited to finally get the internet and find out what all that buzz was about, but I can't say for sure."

Season four reportedly always hinged on whether or not creator and star Jason Sudeikis wanted to return. "Even without talking to each other, and every actor, actress, writer, producer on that show — and [we didn’t get] together and decide this was the message — we all loved the experience," co-creator Bill Lawrence said. "As fans, we’d all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: Whatever Jason feels like doing, and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it."

He added, "Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal. So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m down for whatever he wants to do."

When season three aired, the cast and creatives spoke as if it was the final season. "This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell," Sudeikis told Deadline in March 2023. "The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering."

The show was always intended to have a three-season arc. "We are writing it like that," Goldstein told Sunday Times of season three being the last. Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, told EW, "I think we've always meant it to be three seasons. I think it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show, that we stick to our guns and really just do three seasons. But even as committed to that idea as Jason may have been, none of us were prepared to the degree to which people love this show. Usually shows don't have that kind of effect if they say the word 'f---' so many times. We're kind of in no man's land here, still being discombobulated by the response and I think that could make hard-hearted old Sudeikis soften up a little bit. I will say that, whatever he decides, I will happily abide."
